Roush Performance’s famed P-51 Mustang is back, this time as the most powerful road car the company has ever built.
Hiding for nearly a decade, the new P-51 was officially unveiled last week after first appearing at both the 2016 SEMA show in Las Vegas and the 2017 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
Building on the 2017 Mustang GT, Roush crowns the 5.0-liter V8 with a 2.3-liter Eaton TVS supercharger which pushes power levels to a stout 727 horsepower, along with 610 lb-ft of twist–available in both automatic and manual transmission configurations.
Giving the P-51 a premium soundtrack is Roush’s Active Exhaust System which is finished with black-coated tips and laser-etched with a Roush logo. The exhaust’s real party trick is allowing owners to customize their exhaust note with “virtually endless exhaust sound possibilities” via an app.
On the chassis front, Roush bolts on a full suite of its TrackPak components, which brings 3-way adjustable coilovers along with lightweight forged wheels wrapped in 295/35ZR19 Continental ExtremeContact Sport tires. Those who opt for the manual will also gain new 2-piece rotors and pads from PFC Brakes.
Stylistically, the P-51 looks like other Roush Mustangs, however it gets a new carbon deck spoiler, carbon front splitter, custom hood paint, different grille lighting, along with handpainted P-51 logos. The cockpit is trimmed in rich Amaretto Tuscany leather on both the seats and the door inserts, the company calls it Warbird-inspired styling. Completing the look is a P-51 gauge cluster, red Roush shifter ball, performance pedals, and a P-51 interior plaque.
Only 51 P-51 Mustangs will be built, each carrying a $42,500 price, plus the cost of a donor Mustang.
