Bob Jarmson's 1967 Ford Mustang 390 GT Fastback

Dubai is the most populous city in the United Arab Emirates and one of its largest claims to fame is its architecture. The city is a premier vacation destination for the extravagantly wealthy and its buildings reflect that. The hotels in the city take many different shapes, with the most famous being the sail-shaped Burj Al Arab, which sits on an artificial island and has a perilously perched rooftop tennis court. In counterpoint to the modern technological marvels that abound in the city, a 1967 Mustang 390 GT Fastback was named best in show for the city's inaugural Emaar Burj Dubai Classic Car Show.

Jarmson Winning For His 1967 Mustang

The Mustang in question belongs to Bob Jarmson, a high school teacher at the American School of Dubai. Jarmson brought the 390 GT Fastback to the Middle East from Canada (his home country) last year, and it is a completely and faithfully restored vehicle. Also, it is the only one of its kind in the Middle East. Vehicles at the show were judged on a number of criteria, including: car originality, original color, engine cleanliness and condition, historical value, and overall finish.

And Jarmson's Mustang wasn't the only Ford to take home a prize. A 1921 Model T took home the public vote for best car, a 1928 Ford Essex was named Best Parade Car, and a 1959 Ford 500 Skyline won for Best American Car. The Mustang's win as Best Overall Classic Car precluded it from winning the Best American Car category.

1921 Model T Wins Popular Vote at Emaar Burj Dubai Classic Car Show

Due to positive public response to the show, the Emaar Burj Dubai Classic Car Show is likely to become an annual event, and considering Ford's strong showing, the popularity of American Classic Cars is likely to surge in the Middle East. It seems that the lesson here is that despite cultural and language divides, the Ford Mustang has universal appeal across the globe.
