One of the latest limited editions is the King of the Road Mustang or the GT500KR. This is the car that replaced the Pontiac F-Body as KITT in the Knight Rider series that is expected to debut in February. The limited edition Shelby GT500KR Mustang offers a switch from the typical model, packing a lot more horses under the hood.
Only 1000 units will be made in this limited release. It features the 5.4l supercharged V8 engine powerhouse that clocks in with 540 hp. This is due to the special Ford Racing Power Upgrade Pack that boosts the standard engine up to this whopping amount. Not only has the engine received an upgrade, but the exterior and interior got some attention too.
This model will feature a custom carbon composite hood. This new hood has stainless steel twist down hood pins, scoops and new front air dam that is positioned lower. This air dam features chrome trimmed functional brake ducts as well as new 14 inch Brembo front brakes.
The inspiration for this model is the 1968 KR Shelby model that turned so many heads. You’ll notice this inspiration in the body design as well as in the interior. Buyers will be happy to note the embroidered seats featuring Carroll Shelby’s autograph as well as numbered dash plaque to commemorate the 40th anniversary of this car.
The exterior paint will include special 40th anniversary striping and badges. Although the final price has yet to be set, it is believed that it will range between $50 and $60k at dealers. However, if you can’t find one there, you can easily expect to pay at least $100k if you get the car through an auction.
“I’m proud to once again be a part of an historical moment, bringing back the ‘King of the Road’ Mustang, and collaborating with Ford SVT and Ford Racing” said Carroll Shelby. “I’m committed to continuously upping the ante when it comes to performance, and it’s great to be doing it with Ford.” “The return of the Shelby GT500KR further establishes Mustang as the true king of the pony car segment,” said Robert Parker, manager of Ford Car Brand. “With the unveiling of the new KR we are staying true to the promise we made our loyal Mustang fans to continue Mustang’s prowess by bringing new, exciting and more powerful Mustangs to market.”
Doug Gafka, Ford’s SVT chief designer commented, “This was a great effort between Ford and Shelby Automobiles. The Shelby team and I were in constant contact melding Carroll’s classic design cues with some modern concepts and ideas and finessing them into the design of the new KR.”
