The car's official name is the 2010 Ford Mustang AV-X10, but thanks to the painted-on pinup girl (inspired by similar designs on WWII-era aircraft), it's been nicknamed the "Dearborn Doll." As you can see from the official pictures, old aircraft served as a major influence on the car's exterior design. The AV-X10, which is based on a 2010 Mustang GT, also borrows a few cues from the 2010 Shelby GT500 and the FR500S racing Mustang. The wheels, rear spoiler, and rear lower fascia all come from a Shelby GT500, the exhaust is form a FR500S, it has a Ford Racing Performance Parts Handling Pack, and a Ford Racing supercharger that boosts the 4.6-liter V8's output to 550 horsepower.
The interior also got a number of upgrades. There's a short-throw shifter, the upholstery is bomber jacket leather, the instrument cluster has been outfitted to look like it's straight out of an airplane's cockpit, and there are illuminated AV-X10 emblazoned door sills. And, in another nod towards airplanes, there's a push-button starter instead of the traditional ignition.
Last but not least, there are a few subtle (and not-so subtle) nods to airplanes around the exterior. There are is the paint job, and the glass roof features the U.S. Air Force's distinctive star. Also, if you look closely, you will see that on the wheels, at the base of the spokes, there's a bit of orange paint, just like the propeller of the plane in the picture.
If you want to have a chance to see the AV-X10 or bid on it during the auction, then head to Oshkosh, Wisconsin from July 27-August 2 for the Experimental Aircraft Association's annual AirVenture event. Check out their website here for details.
