Classic Mustang Colors for 1964 1/2 and 1965

May 13, 2008  By:  All Ford Mustangs News Desk

This is a mea culpa article. Not long ago I wrote about the “Eyeshadow Blue” Mustang at the Smithsonian Museum. (Eye Shadow Blue 1965 Mustang at the Smithsonian).

Since I have never been to the Smithsonian, I relied on the Smithsonian website, photos and the Washington Post for details,  Meanwhile I had Ditzler paint codes on hand.  I looked at the photos of the car and the Ditzler paint codes and did not do the connection in my head that the color on the Smithsonian car had to be from the 1965 Ditzler codes.  (See below.)

A well-versed AFM member (thank you Veronica!) spotted the error and pointed out a couple of problems:

The article identified the car as Skylight Blue when it really is Silver Blue. As you can see on the Ditzler paint code card, in the 1964 model year, paint code 'Y' was Skylight Blue which was dropped in August of 1964. So only a 1964 ½ could be Skylight Blue. In the 1965 model year, paint code 'Y' was Silver Blue.

According to the Washington Post article on the Mustang donated by Eleanor McMillan, the interior was midnight blue but Veronica pointed out that that car had the interior code 22, medium blue all vinyl.
