And so it begins. The 55 competitors of Targa Newfoundland 2009 rolled away from the St. John’s waterfront Sunday afternoon into a week of hard driving over more than 2,000 km of Eastern Newfoundland roads.
At least one team found it harder than they would have liked. The Subaru Impreza WRX STi of Marc Lachapelle and Keith Townsend found a wall in Flatrock during the first prologue stage, damaging bodywork and suspension components. An afternoon update said both driver and navigator had been checked out at the Health Sciences Centre and cleared to race. At last report, the Subaru crew was working to repair the car.
That was the only incident for Prologue Day; two practice stages through Flatrock, then several laps around Confederation Building for the many fans who gathered.
The competition gets underway in earnest Monday morning in Argentia. The first stage road closes at 8:55 a.m.
