2010 Ford Fusion |
The Let Ford Recycle Your Ride website launched on June 25th and, so far, has already been used by over 250,000 people looking to trade in their old cars for newer, more efficient models. The way the website works is you enter information about your car (make, model, model year, engine, transmission type) and then the site checks it against a large database. Depending on the what sort of gas mileage and emissions the vehicle had, you may qualify for a rebate of between $3,500 to $4,500 towards the purchase of a new, fuel efficient car.
Of those 250,000 people who have already visited Ford's site, the most popular vehicles looked at for a replacement are the Ford Fusion and its sister, the Mercury Milan, which together account for 30% of searches. This should come as little surprise considering the latest marketing blitz surrounding the Fusion. Ford has a total of 20 vehicles that qualify for the program under their three brand names, including: the Ford Focus, Fusion, Edge, Flex, Taurus, Escape, Ranger, and F-150; the Lincoln MKT and MKX; and the Mercury Milan and Mariner. There are a few others, like the Ford Transit Connect Van and F-Series Heavy Duty that qualify under certain commercial truck requirements.

Here's a quick rundown of the qualification rules:
- Car can't have been manufactured more than 25 years before trade-in
- Combined fuel economy must be under 18 mpg
- Car must be in drivable condition
- Car must have been insured and registered for at least one full year before trade-in
- Some commercial trucks (depending on make, model, and emissions) only qualify if they were manufactured after 2001
