The glass roof is considered to be a step between the convertible and the traditional hard top. You get the benefits of extra light without having to worry about the downsides of a convertible. Those who have tried out the new roof have commented that the glass really increases overall visibility and provides a completely unique driving experience.
Ford is one of the first companies to consider offering a glass roof as an option. Although many worry about its safety, the company manufacturing the roofs is working closely with Ford to ensure that the roofs meet or exceed hard top safety standards. If you have not seen one of these glass top Mustangs, they are truly a sight to behold. It is expected that the glass roof option will be very popular as more people give them a try.
The Shelby GT500KR or the King of the Road as its own was the vehicle chosen to sport this option at Barrett Jackson. Production on this newest line of Mustangs was kicked off on January 11th, which also happens to be Carroll Shelby’s birthday. His 85th birthday was certainly an event as this groundbreaking model rolled out of production.
The special GT500KR produced for the auction is the only one of its kind. It features glossy ebony paint and black interior. The proceeds from the sale are going to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Ford has been deeply involved in charity work in the past years and this year they are really pulling out all the stops.
Although the usual models for the GT500KR include racing stripes on the roof, the glass option that was included in the auctioned car had the stripes etched into the glass. Carroll Shelby commented that, ““Barrett-Jackson will be a rare opportunity for one lucky bidder to own a Shelby GT500KR with a glass roof, a car no one else can even buy. It’s been too long, but I’m very excited to have the ‘King of the Road’ back.”
“Only Ford Motor Company and Shelby American have sold more genuine Ford powered Shelby vehicles than the Barrett-Jackson auction over the past 36 years,” said Craig Jackson, Chairman/CEO of the Barrett Jackson “I'm proud that Ford and Carroll Shelby chose to sell a one-of-a-kind 2008 Shelby GT500KR coupe at our auction, where only the finest, authentic Shelby vehicles are offered to the public.”
The new GT500KR’s are now available to the public and are expected to be strong sellers this year. This is the model that is also being featured as the new KITT in the upcoming Knight Rider television series.
