Coachbuilder I Legacy Brings Iacocca Back To The Mustang Fold

  Sep 21, 2009

When Lee Iacocca introduced the Ford Mustang at the 1964 New York World’s Fair, he believed he had a good thing going, but how could he have guessed his little sporting car would grow to become one of the world’s favorites? Or that the spark that started the pony wars would survive to see its 45th anniversary?

To celebrate the milestone, I Legacy brought the industry legend onboard for its own tribute, a 2009-platform work of art dubbed the Iacocca Silver 45th Anniversary Edition Ford Mustang. Only 45 of the heavily tuned cars — all wearing the Iacocca selected silver skin — will be made, and some have already been sold for more than US$100,000.

The remainder can be had for the exclusive price of  $89,950. And up.

Nearly two years in the making, the Iacocca Silver Edition Mustang is a collaborative effort by Iacocca, designer Michael Leone and Gaffoglio Family Metalcrafters, a coachbuilding and Design Company in Fountain Valley, Calif. The new business venture is called I Legacy, and it will be in concert with Galpin Ford, the exclusive Ford dealership to offer these Iacocca Silver 45th Anniversary Edition Ford Mustangs to the public.

“Once in a while a car comes along that changes everything, and that was the original Mustang,” said Iacocca.

The largely hand-built car features custom sunken headlights and slanted grill, and it sits low on custom-forged 20-inch wheels. Under the hood, buyers can choose from either a normally aspirated 4.6-liter V-8, rated at 320 horsepower, or an optional supercharged version that delivers 400 horsepower. Only a five-speed gearbox is available.

The suspension has also been upgraded, with the firmer springs and re-valved shocks of the Ford Racing Handling Package. Ford Racing brakes are optional.

Inside, the car comes with diamond stitched leather trim, an Iacocca signature dash plaque and serial number, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and aluminum door sill plates.
