Sigma Motorworks' GTE |
When it comes to boutique American electric sports cars, the two big players in the game right now are Tesla and Fisker, and those companies aren't even that big, employing only a handful of people each and not having the capacity to really mass produce vehicles. If the electric sports car market is so tough to break into that only two companies have succeeded, why would somebody else try? Well, Sigma Motorworks might have an ace up their sleeve: their electric sports car is based on the venerable Ford Mustang.

The GTE's Mustang-based Interior |
So can a pony car give up its horsepower in favor of kilowatts? From the looks of it, Sigma has done a pretty good job. Their GTE model features a cockpit taken straight from a Ford Mustang, but the engine has been replaced with two electric motors that each generate roughly 100 horsepower. Also, the way the motors are configured allows the car to have all wheel drive. The front and rear differentials are also taken straight from Ford.

GTE Profile |
Will the GTE be successful? That's hard to say right now, but Sigma has an uphill battle ahead of them. The car is set to have a 100 mile range and a top speed of 145 mph (of course, reaching that top speed will drain so much power that the 100 mile range will be drastically reduced), but that may not be enough to keep the company's head above water. But, who knows? Maybe Ford will realize that they've already built a lot of this vehicle and enlist it as a model for future production.
