When it was introduced, the S197 chassis Mustang represented a tremendous improvement over the antiquated Fox 4 (1994-04) models. It was tighter and much more track capable than its predecessor out the box.
However, one drawback was weight. On average, 2005-10 Mustangs are around 200-300 lbs heavier than their forebears, so for racers, any weight savings that can be realized are most welcomed. An obvious one concerns the car's two-piece factory driveshaft, which on its own weighed close to 45 lbs. It wasn't long before various aftermarket manufacturers started offering one piece, lighter and stouter alternatives. One company that's been at the forefront of late-model Mustang driveshaft technology is The Driveshaft Shop, which has now released a new 1-Piece Carbon Fiber shaft, designed to fit 2005-10 Mustang GTs.
Listed as Part Number PDSH9-C-CV1, this new piece has not only been conceived as one of the lightest and sturdiest available, it's also been designed to quell harmonic vibrations that are common on many late-model Mustang replacement shafts.
Specifications include a 3.25-inch diameter High Modulus carbon fiber tube that's smaller across than others on the market (eliminating heat and clearance issues) and assembled via DSS bonding. It also sports a 1350 front U-joint and flange in order to mate with the stock Tremec T3650/ 5R55 transmissions, plus an improved 300M CV mount that's stronger than the rest of the shaft.
In addition, the CV joint is a custom, modified high-speed 108 mm piece with a special boot and grease to ensure maximum durability (the carbon fiber shaft comes with all the necessary hardware, including a custom conversion plate in order to fit the 108 mm CV).
Rated at 900 horsepower, the 1-Piece Carbon Fiber shaft comes with a 1-year warranty and is balanced on one of the most sophisticated machines at the industry. List price at the time of posting was $1,249.99.
