Newfoundland Mustang Owners Show, Shine And Hand Thousands To Autism Society

Oct 8, 2009  By:  All Ford Mustangs News Desk

For a club that didn’t even exist until this spring, the Newfoundland Chapter of All Ford Mustangs, NL Mustangs (NLMustangs.ca) has had one busy summer, and the peak event came Saturday, Oct. 3 in the province’s capital city, St. John’s. More than 100 Mustangs filled the parking lot at the Don Cherry’s restaurant on Freshwater Road, and hundreds of people dropped by to support the Autism Society of Newfoundland and Labrador, take a chance on ticket draws, vote for their favorite Mustang and soak up the pony car chatter.

The show presented a great cross-section of the car’s greatest years. Classic ‘60s coupes and fastbacks from the 1970s were scattered among the Fox bodies, convertibles and modern Cobras and Shelby supercars. The stars of the show had to be Ray Halleran’s Targa-veteran Racing For Autism 2010 GT, and local dealer Dave Wilkins’ GT mid-engined homage to the classic GT40 racing car of the ‘60s.

But while everyone had their favorites, the best fun was dropping by the vendor booths (Cartunes, Custom Wheels, and the Autism Society) or walking among the rows, seeing how each owner had made his or her car their own, and talking Mustang with fellow enthusiasts.

Unless you were one of the kids lined up for the Tigger bouncy tent.

The biggest winner of the day was the Autism Society. The club’s efforts collected about $2,500 and Don Cherry’s added a $500 check to the mix for a $3,000 total. But there were other awards handed out:

Peoples Choice Award (a $500 Gift Certificate from American Muscle) was presented to Beau Taylor for his 2003 Mustang GT.

The Children's Choice Award ($200 Gift Certificate from CruisinConcepts) went to Ray Halleran and his Racing for Autism 2010 Mustang GT.

The Don Cherry’s Choice Award ($100 Gift Certificate from Don Cherry's) went to Dave Powell’s 1972 Boss Mustang.

And the NTV Choice Award (a $200 Gift Certificate from H & H Automotive) was presented to Bill Dicks, who had his 2009 Shelby GT 500 Convertible on display.
