Vaughn Gittin came out strong in his qualifying lap this past Saturday morning and nabbed the top spot after his run.  Once the qualifying was done, Vaughn ended up in sixth.  He settled into the top 32 and quickly advanced to the top 16 after a few runs of insane angles and plenty of power.  The top 16 proved just as successful.  Vaughn was up against Joon Maeng, one of Vaughn's fellow members from the Drift Alliance, and they both put up impressive lead runs.  However, Vaughn's chase run was superb as he stuck like glue to the back of Joon's car, giving him the victory.

In the top 8, Vaughn went up against Robbie Nishida, who was able to complete his first run, but ran into mechanical problems that prohibited him from completing the round, pushing Vaughn into the Final Four.  Vaughn went up against Tyler McQuarrie, who drives a Nissan 350Z and is sponsored by Falken Tire alond with Gittin, in the next round.  They stayed close together, but McQuarrie had to correct in his chase run, which made the difference in giving Gittin the win.

The finals marked another Falken Tire teammate matchup, this time with Vaughn squaring off against Darren McNamara.  Both runs were incredibly close, there were huge angles, tons of smoke, and lots of speed.  But, in the end, the judges decided that McNamara had performed better and he was awarded the win.

The winner's podium for Formula Drift 2009 Round 3 marked a couple of firsts:  all three of the podium finishers were sponsored by Falken Tire, a first-ever for a sponsor in Formula Drift; and also, this is the first time that the 2010 Ford Mustang has made a podium finish in professional motorsports.  Not bad considering that the 2010 Mustang has only been around for a few months.  Vaughn is now in fifth place in the overall points standings, and he's getting ready for Round Four, which takes place at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway on July 10th.
