It was billed as an auction of celebrity cars, but when the final gavel fell, Carroll Shelby was still the star of the collector car world. A 1965 Shelby Cobra Roadster was the top seller at the 2009 Barrett-Jackson auction which wrapped up Oct. 10, topping even the 2009 Iacocca Silver Anniversary Mustang GT. Together, the two cars drew more than US$792,000 (including the 10 per cent buyers premium).
Shelby’s name was associated with two other Mustangs in the top five cars: a 1967 Shelby GT500 SE Super Snake Continuation Fastback sold for $330,000, while a 2007 Prudhomme Edition drew $302,500. And overall, Mustangs and Shelby-tagged ponies drew almost $2.7 million. The top-selling Cobra is a 1965 model that had been stored since its registration expired in 1972. The 289, 4-speed was fully restored before hitting the auction block.
The “continuation” GT500SE Super Snake was the first to be produced by one of a select few Shelby builders under a recent agreement with Carroll Shelby Licensing.
Boasting a 780-horsepower supercharged aluminum Shelby 427 FE, it also has a Tremec TKO 5-speed, coilover suspension and, of course, Shelby’s signature.
Shelby teamed up with Don "The Snake" Prudhomme to produce the Prudhomme Super Snake package, with only 100 available through Shelby Autos. The auctioned specimen is concept car used to launch the program. It’s powered by a 5.4L supercharged engine worth 800 horsepower on race fuel or 750 hp on 93-octane pump gas.
The concept also includes a Kenne Belle modified air intake sticking out of the tilt front end, a five-point impact safety harness and Borla side exhaust system. A front and rear adjustable BMR racing suspension and drag tires are included.
And while some classic Mustangs drew crazy dollars - the Cobra Jets were particularly popular with $104,500 paid for one 1969 Mach 1 - there were still a couple of bargains snapped up over the weekend. Here’s a full list of Mustang results.
