When you dream the Mustang dream, sometimes you get to dream big. As big as, say, the 550-horsepower 2011 Shelby GT500. Lean back, and consider freeing that 5.4-liter beast from the cage of everyday highways and byways. Move with the Special Vehicle Team performance running gear. Hold tight as the 510 foot-pounds of torque push you into your seat. Getting the picture?

No? Well, Fordís SVT engineers are here to help. A recent track test at the Virginia International Raceway was captured in glorious YouTube video to help fuel those Pony daydreams.

Vehicle Dynamics engineer Gene Martindale piloted the 2011 Shelby GT500 coupe around the VIRís seldom-used, 4.1-mile Grand West Course to a lap time of 2:58.48, more than eight seconds a lap faster than the 2010 model.

With an all-new aluminum-block engine for 2011, improved steering and handling and an optional SVT Performance Package that adds Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperCar G:2 tires, lighter wheels, a higher rear axle ratio and stiffer springs, the car is made to attack the track. Hereís a few minutes of it doing just that. Turn it up ...
