Vaughn Gittin was probably feeling confident when he got ready for his qualifying rounds for round four of Formula Drift 2009. The event was held at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, and the new course was made to resemble the iconic drifting course at Ebisu, a Japanese course the Vaughn recently visited and drove on. During a practice session, something went awry and Vaughn slammed into the wall just after initiating a drift. Vaughn was uninjured but his 2010 Mustang had definitely seen better days. His crew wasn't ready to give in, though. Within two hours, they had the Mustang up and running so that Vaughn could get in his qualifying laps.
In the top 32 round, Vaughn came out with guns blazing. He followed his opponent on the first run, then led in the second. He initiated earlier than normal, but with good reason: he was going 82.9 mph. Yep, at a speed faster than most of us drive on the highway, Vaughn is comfortable burning up his tires and going sideways. Needless to say, Vaughn took the win for the round.
The top 16 round wasn't so kind, however. Once again, Vaughn followed for the first run of the round and put up a solid showing. As he was going through the back lot to get ready for his turn in the lead, Vaughn's car picked up some debris that went unnoticed. Just after Vaughn was initiating his run, a tire went flat, causing him to spin out and lose the round. Still, though, the top 16 finish netted Vaughn some more points in the 2009 Formula Drift series, increasing his rank to 4th.
The next round of Formula Drift 2009 takes place at the Evergreen Speedway in Seattle on August 7.
