Question Where is the fuel filter located on a 1994 Mustang?

Hey. I have a 94GT and I am trying to figure out exactly where the fuel filter is? Any help with this would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have never been under a 94 GT but I am willing to guess it is in the same location as the older Mustangs, above the rear differential bolted to the underside of the floorpan. Maybe someone will give you a more definite and correct answer.

Yes, right in front of the fuel tank held up by a hose-clamp bracket. simple 5 min change. Easy access, just remember to release air bubbles from the fuel rail when you're done.

how do you know when you need the change the fuel filter? and how do you release the air bubbles? thanks


DEAD: 1994 GT (a pine tree fell on it during a windstorm...great huh)

NEW: 1995 GT Convertible, Triple Black; receiving all the goodies from the 1994 gt and some more stuff too

The filter usually has an interval to change it at. i believe its 30,000 miles, but if you run bad gas, its better to change it more often. If you cant remember when you changed it last, change it then. otherwise you can do good by changing it every 4-5 oil changes. just for best protection.
when you put the new filter on, and snap the white plastic clips into place, you will have air in the line.
Turn the Key on,(where fuel pump kicks on)
pop the hood, and locate the fuel rail.
on the front of the fuel rail there should be a lil black cap that looks like the tire stem valve cap where you put air in your tire.
Unscrew this cap and it is a valve like that. put a rag around both sides of it and use somethng to push down the valve (like when you let the air out of the tires)
You should get some fuel, but a lot of air.. when the air is gone and its strictly fuel, stop and put the cap back on.
What that does is prevents "dry starts" air bubbles that keep it from starting and can burn up fuel injectors (probably not but ive seen it)

The suggested replacement for fuel filters are every 30K miles or 24 months. Or you notice something that leads you to believe it is clogged.

Here is a pic of the location I took for you. Not real clear but I ran to the garage and held my camera blind taking the picture.


Steps to replace

1. Releive fuel system pressure. Look on fuel rail passenger side front looks like a tire stem. Just remove cap and press down on the stem with a sharp opject and release fuel pressure. Make sure no open flames are around you will get gas coming out of it.

2. remove filter. Use fingers on plastic clips to remove them or you might break them. If you use screwdriver just be careful. NOTE which way the fuel filter faces so you don't put the new on in backwards.

3. check hoses and fittings for dirt or cracks and replace if necessary

4. replace with new filter (check direction it is facing) then hook up the hoses just as you took them off.

5. turn key on to build pressure and release pressure at the fuel rail to ensure all the air bubbles are out. May have to do this a few times to get them all out but it is not totally necessary.

I'll try and do a full article on this later for our tech section but this should get you through it. Very simple just becareful anything working with gas.

Oh yea even though you removed the pressure on the line don't be right underneath the fuel filter when you pull the hoses off unless you want a face full of gas. (speaking from experience).

Thanks everyone. I changed it today when I got home from school. I thought I saw it when I swapped my 2.73 gear out in September, but was making sure. I was underneath it but to the side a little and gas soaked my arm. LOL. Next time I will move even further away. It didn't take long at all as you said. Thanks again.

Good! never wear safty glasses when changing your fuel fiter and it good to smoke too :smoke: :smoke: :smoke: Also take the old filter and trow it in the nearest creek. The fish will love you! (sponge Bob backwards day)

Here a little something I got from Haynes...
In the trunk, driver side, there is pump reset, if you look to the lower outside of that, there is a connecter, unplug it while the car is running and when the engine dies (1-10minutes), the line is supposed to be cleared and ready to change filter...
I did this, and after the new filter was in, I had no air bubbbles to bleed off...

Just a note of thanks to Dale Brown and others for the steps on replacing the fuel filter on my 95 GT Convertable. Completed the task with little effort...little money spent... and happy results. As a side note for anyone else doing this maintance...I did not need the "special" tool sold at parts stores. Used a flathead screwdriver to release the clips and replaced the old ones with new ones that came with the Wix filter. Pay attention to the direction of the old fuel filter so you can re-install the new one the same way. (On the Wix filter one side is rounded and the other side is flat so you can tell the difference in flow direction.)

Mustangs and Tomcats...is there anything else?
