1995 Mustang GT BBK Cold Air Intake + 70mm Throttle body questions

Hi,

the first two mods on my 1995 GT are complete, and I have some questions. Apologies upfront if this has been answered somewhere else before but I couldn't find anything.

1 - BBK CAI
seems to work well but a whining sound (even on stock TB) at around 1700rpm. First couple of times I thought its the siren of a cop car behind me -- any cure for this?

I noticed that the tubes are about 1" too short, no matter how I twist+turn them.. so the gaps are 'bridged' by the blue rubber tubes. I think it would be a smoother air flow if I could nicely align the metal tubes.. but why are they too short?

Overall nice power gain with the CAI

2 - BBK 70mm TB
went in smooth, but now I have another 'whistler' when I begin to open throttle. like a 'sueeek!'. Any cure for this?

I didn't feel any additional power gain with the TB compared to stock with CAI. Will a tune or chip, like say the SCT 4-bank eliminator free the horses?

Or is it time for another mod? I'm looking for things that I (beginner) can do myself. So heads probably not for now.

The whinning sounds im more than likely you hearing the air filter now that it isnt enclosed in a box with a silencer on it anymore. there is a bit of a gap on the bbk setup but shouldnt be a lot. The only reason i would go to a 70 mm throttle body is if you were running a h/c/i setup. Its too big for a stock motor and is more than likely the reason the stock one felt better.

As for a tune there is not a reason to do one. Most people have got one the i need a tune boat. Its just not needed unless you are running big power adders that the computer can no longer compensate for. ie boost or nitrous.

If you are thinking about doing other mods start with the h/c/i
heads, camshaft, intake. Best bang for the buck but i wouldnt recommend doing it if your not used to working on mustangs. Let a shop do it. Hope all the advice gave you a bit of help.

No real gain from any of that. The TB can be dremeled smooth to get rid of the sueek. The air filter will cause a whistle too you can put a piece of thin plastic around (form a housing) to defer a straighter air flow.

Well in his defense, I too felt a huge difference when I put a CAI on my old 95 GT. It wouldn't even break the tires loose before, then on the first test drive with the new CAI kit installed, it broke the tires loose.

Having a bigger throttle body won't cost you any power. This issue has been tested many times before. It won't gain any power either unless the engine requires more airflow. With the prices for 94/95 Tbodies, I would have sunk that money elsewhere myself, but at least you'll be ready for the H/C/I you're gonna order soon, right??

on the TB- what part exactly do I need to dremel do get rid of the chirp?

I know many people start modding at the rear but I chose to work my way from air filter, tubes, TB to the engine. We'll take care of the rest, trust me.

Now on the H/C/I. Stupid question, but haven't I taken care of the 'I' already with the CAI?

Then let's talk about H/C. Ok I'm a rookie but I know what a cylinder head is. I've changed one on a 1-cyl motor bike a couple of years back, but a V-8 seems like a big deal. Can this be done DYI is the question.. and what would be a good product? Or when you say 'H' do you really mean the manifold headers? (OK I know this was stupid so go ahead and beat me up)

Now here's the really stupid question. When you guys say 'C' I figure you mean the camshaft, right? So what would it take, and what would be a good product?

The h is indeed heads not headers. C= camshaft I= intake

To answer your question no you didnt take care of the intake with the cold air kit. Thats part of doing it simply because its restricted but so is the upper and lower intake.

Good things to go with
Intake: trickflow not too many companys make a whole lot of performance parts for the 4.6
Camshaft: depending on your laws the sky is the limit
Heads: not too many to choose from patriot performance which isnt a whole lot better than stock

As this is a 5.0, is the trick flow intake worthwhile looking at? Are they hard to install? What about their spacers? I never understood that.

From my experiences I can tell you that the TFS street heat isn't much better than the stock piece.

For intakes I'd go with TFS Track heat, Edelbrock Performer or one of the GT40 intakes (Cobra, Explorer, Tubular)

For heads the sky is the limit. You can spend anywhere from 800 bucks to 2 grand.

And the cam will really depend on the above two...when you've decided on heads and intake, then you choose your cam.

Alot of folks have gone with the complete top end kit from TFS. It comes with EVERYTHING you need to rebuild the top half of your motor and the combo is said to increase HP to around 350 at the flyhweel (about 290-310 to the tires).

so this trick flow top-end kit, how much skill and time would you say it takes to install that?

Trickflow intake is way better than stock. Why you would even say that you would go on a explorer intake and pass up a trickflow intake is beyond me.I tend to like the systemax intake and if you have never done one there are a few forums on here that should be able to help you out. Or just leave it to a experenced shop to do it. The spacer is not needed and if you decide to use it plan on buying a hood. Usually people use it when they change heads and go with taller valve covers to accomidate stud style heads.

Some people also dont know you live in california and dont understand how strict the smog laws are. I would go with a trickflow stage 1 camshaft. Nice aggressive idle all out good performance. Heads trickflow are nice but air flow research are a little better. Intake its a toss i favor the systemax. But i have only owned 8 different mustangs 2 fully built and i still wouldnt say a trickflow intake isnt good.

What I said was, a Trickflow STREET HEAT isn't much better than a stocker. Read the shootouts they've done throughout the years. And if a magazine is down playing a paying advertiser's product, you know it's true. Having said that, there's no way I'd pay over 400 bucks for a Street heat when I would get the same or near the same results from a 100$ Explorer intake. The trackheat is another matter all together.

And I say to druegeme, if you get that top end kit, go ahead and rip into it yourself. The knowledge and experience you'll gain doing it yourself is so worth it, I can't even begin to explain the feeling of accomplishment when you pull something like that off.

And it's not that difficult, do a little research and make sure you have a firm grasp on it before you begin. Don't forget, you have one of the best tools in the world for teaching you to work on your car, the INTERNET!! I'm sure there are lots on this forum who wouldn't have a problem answering any questions you'd have.

ok thanks.. I was in a local store (mustang ranch santa clara) today and they have some nice stuff there. I talked to the guy a bit and asked about heads (this is something I would not attempt myself right now). He recommended doing heads and intake at the same time and quoted me $4grand for that with labor. Whoa.

So for me its DYI or nothing. I will continue to learn&listen around here for a while and then decide what to do. But not pay 4k to somebody to work on my car.

Meanwhile I'll try to smoothen my intake to get rid of the 'squeak' and some mufflers maybe.
