Question Will 1.7 roller rockers work? 1995 Mustang GT

I am refreshing my Stock 95 5.0. I have added an E303 cam and want to put on roller rockers. Will the 1.7 rockers give enough clearance from valve to piston? The pistons do have the valve relief but will it be enough with the E303 and 1.7? or should I stay with 1.6?

-1995 Mustang GTS --- Tear down and rebuild of engine underway...adding E303 cam, Comp Cams double roller timing set, FRPP roller lifters and push rods, 1.6 or 1.7 Roller rockers, Stage2 SVE clutch, Smog Pump delete --- 3.55 Gears waiting to be installed.

1.7's will clear just fine. but i believe in any cam swap you should ALWAYS clay the pistons!

91 mustang coupe: 331 stroker, jr heads, Vic intake, 292h cam, Holley hp carb, bottle fed, 5 lug disc swap, prostars, built rear with 4.56 gears, etc...
97 mustang 3.8: stock daily driver

+1 clay ALWAYS.

cams, and all basic bolt ons, arizen seats, cowl hood, and now my buckets got a hole in it (meaning im broke) but when i fix it ill have gears and some trany work

You're better off staying off staying with the 1.6 rocker ratio. The only thing the 1.7 ratio is going to do for you, is change the geometry in the lift of the cam. One thing you'll most likely need, is new push rods to compensate for the lift on the cam. In the long run, you might be better off just buying a new cam. But in case you decide to go with the 1.7 ratio rockers, make sure you measure the piston to valve clearance, Mike. SCT Tuner.

i just put 1.7 roller rockers in my 95 gt, and they are working great however i have a stock cam. I've read that the e 303 cam will work with the 1.7 roller rocker but anything with larger lift will NOT clear the pistons, even if they have reliefs.

either way, with an aftermarket cam he will have to measure for new pushrods. so if you have to get the pushrods anyway, why not add the rr's!?

.500 lift cam 1.6 ratio = .800
.500 lift cam 1.7 ratio = .850

.05 of an inch is what ya get.
Ya get more lift and also it will change you lift duration, the speed the valve opens and closes.
I'm not sure exactly how it would effect the lift duration, it will open faster but will open more and be fully open at the same time. I think ya will be able to keep the same push rods but check them.

At risk of beating a dead horse, this cam will likely give you idle problems. Everything else being equal, keep this in mind. If you don't mind it loping and wanting to stall out, that is one thing. Just don't want you to be surprised when you put it in and the car runs poorly initially.

Honestly, I'm looking for it to be lopey'. I am looking for that old school muscle sound. I've heard a few 302's with the E303 cam through flowmaster's or magnaflows, and that sound is what I'm looking for. Don't get me wrong, I'm not just camming it for the sound....performance is also a main focus. I'm looking to build a more aggressive than stock, budget built, honda bruiser and street cruiser.

The only engine modifications are an E303 cam, Comp cams double roller timing set, FRPP roller lifters, FRPP Push rods, and 1.6 or 1.7 lifters. I'm not going to be doing much more to the engine other than bolt-ons as time goes on. (throttle body, CIA, MAF, injectors, etc.)
So, I'm just hoping not to blow up my engine on the first start by putting in rockers that are gonna cause valve to piston damage.


Does anyone know what the max lift at valve is? (before you slam the valve into the piston)

anything over .540" lift is the disaster zone...

If everything else is equal, you will probably get more than just a lopey sound. You will also have stalling issues and driveability issues. Hard to appreciate the sound when the car won't go down the road correctly.

Did the people you talked to with the E cam have a chip burned or anything? Because that is often the solution that is required to make the cam work.

Once again, just sayin'...

I did keep the stock length but I ordered new FRPP pushrods. Something my Dad taught me a long time ago when rebuilding engines was never to reuse old pushrods.

Honestly, I've yet to talk to someone in person who has had a problem with this cam...although I've read many horror stories here. The car in particular, that eased my mind on this cam was a 1994 GT with a very similar setup to mine. Bone stock other than a few internal upgrades, along with several bolt on's. No chipping, no tuning, no computer swapping. I suppose this may be a rare case, but it seems my odds are about 50/50 that I will have minimal issues. Even Ford Racing lists the E303 cam as a computer compatible cam for 94 - 95.

I will keep everyone posted on my success or failure with the E303 once the engine is back in. (Hopefully before the end of May, but probably June sometime)
