1994 Mutang GT Egr valve location

I have a 94' gt. The car bucks a little bit when you are barely on the gas. Like going down the road at a normal speed it sort of bucks a little bit. somebody told me that it might be carbon build up on the egr valve. Where is that located and how hard is it to get out and check it?

I understand that you have a problem, and what I am about to say may be completely irrelevant, but because of the brevity of your post, I thought it warranted...

Prior to assuming that you have bad parts, there are certain things that you should absolutely make certain to rule out. Sure, its not likely an oil change will affect your driveability at idle, so I won't recommend that a possible cure. furthermore, you didn't indicate you just bought the car, so I am assuming you keep up on it, unlike when you pick up a car an assume the prior owner put off all of the maintenance to save a few bucks. That being said...

How does the air filter look? PCV valve? Plugs and wires? Fuel filter?

When was the last time you cleaned the MAF? Its super easy to do and is often the culprit with mild to severe driveability issues.

Next, have you pulled the codes? That too is easy to do. If you don't want to mess around counting your CEL light flashes, by a cheapy OBD-I scanner from Autozone or wherever. It plugs in to the harness in the engine bay, by the passenger side strut tower.

Only after making sure all of these things are done would I then move on to messing with the EGR. Who knows? Maybe you have a bad O2 sensor or something. That is why I would really recommend pulling the codes first. You can often save yourself a lot of time guessing at causes of your problem.

EGR is on back of the intake, where it bends around to the front of the car, kind of behind the throttle body. Easy to see. It has a big metal tube coming out the bottom of it.

MAF = Mass Air Flow meter. Its in the air intake, over by the passenger side fender. There is a wiring harness that connects to it that you have to unplug to change the air filter. It is in a plastic housing. If you look at it, you will see a little post sticking out from the side into the area of the air intake that the air flows through (hope that makes sense, but it is pretty straightforward when you look at it). That little post has a bundle of white wires in it. The wires are what gets dirty.

The MAF tells the computer how to run the injectors (basically), so if it is not working correctly it can create nightmares. Most times when it is not working correctly it is because it is dirty.

You can buy MAF cleaner at the parts store. Its cheap. Just spray it and soak it. Some folks use a Q Tip to clean it in conjunction with the cleaner, but I am paranoid of breaking the little tiny wires (they are pretty delicate) so I just soak it and let it dry. Alternatively, people say to use any non-chlorinated electrical cleaner, but I think its just as easy to go buy MAF cleaner, so I have never used that method.

The key is to clean it without breaking those wires.

When I go super slow barley on the gas it bucks, always has.. I figured it is just the way it is..
Today driving through a large park at about 7 mph she was a bucken bronco..Yehaaa!... its just a chain reaction. The car bucks a little and it travels through my leg and bounces the peddle in turn the car bucks and the cycle goes... potentially getting larger with each cycle. Adjusting my speed, foot or shifting to an alt. gear usually clears it up.

Hey Matt so this OBD-I scanner will gives us codes even if there's no check engine light on?

You can have codes absent a CEL. Some codes do not trip the CEL at all, and some only trip the CEL when the fault is present (that is, the CEL goes away).

For instance, suppose you remove your SMOG system. You won't get a CEL, but you sure as **** will get a code or two if you scan the car. Not that the SMOG has anything to do with the post, it just came to mind as a code that doesn't cause a CEL.

At the bottom of the page, after the self-test procedures, there is a bit of a discussion about CEL lights and codes. Pretty good stuff.

That will work just fine. All the scanner does is eliminate the need to sit in the driver's seat with a pen and paper and count the CEL flashes or wire up a voltmeter into the test port.

If you jumper the OBD-I port as outlined in the test procedure I linked above, you are basically using the CEL as the code scanner. You get the exact same results if you use the scanner. If you were to read the self-test procedure, you will see they tell how to use a voltmeter to retrieve the codes. It is all exactly the same. Personally, I just think the scanner, for $30, is easier to use. I find I don't end up having to run through the codes eight or nine times to make sure I got them correct.

On a side note, I find most people, if they are unfamiliar with cars generally, are for some reason opposed to inserting wire jumpers into harnesses and counting lights flashing in the dash. So, I recommend getting the code reader. But, really, all the code reader is is a wire jumper and a light bulb. But, it plugs into the port nice and neatly and the fact that it looks professional often gives people the confidence to believe it is working that they may not have with a paperclip. This is the reason that I bought mine originally. For whatever reason, I just didn't feel comfortable with the DIY method. But, I was unfamiliar with the car and I was sure it was just waiting for me to fry the computer or otherwise break it.
