95 Mustang gt speedometer stopped working

So It's just as the title says. I have a 95 Mustang gt and the speedometer for some reason quit working on me. It's happened before but for some reason just started working one day. Then a few nights ago I was driving and it stopped working again. I've tried taking apart the instument cluster and nothing is solving the problem. I do have a Dallas Mustangs speed calibrater in the car. Could the issue be with the speed calibrater? Any ideas or inputs would be much appreciated.

Your VSS is a variable reluctance sensor so if you have access to a labscope you could backprobe it and either spin the sensor or lift the tires and runt he car in gear and see the signal you get. Its basically a magnetic pulse generator... so the faster you go the higher the frequency of pulses. If the waveform on the labscope doesnt look right, or there is no waveform at all you should replace the sensor.

If there is all 8 pulses per rotation of the sensor and if responds properly you should begin diagnosing other possible problems.

Where can I get one of these "labscopes" and how do you use it? Thanks for the reply btw.

It wouldn't hurt to pop the VSS out of the side of the transmission and see if the teeth on the little gear are in good shape.

If you have put that 23-tooth gear in there it will likely have lost some teeth... If this is the case, you should go with the more reliable 21-tooth gear and recalibrate the Speed-Cal!

I pulled out the sensor the first time the speedometer stopped working and there's no gear at all. These years don't use them.

While it is true that beginning in 1994 there is no longer a speedometer cable there STILL IS A GEAR inside that turns the VSS to make the electronic signal to drive the speedometer.

Beginning in 1999 that gear was eliminated by a metal "reluctor" wheel and the sensor became an "OSS" rather than a "VSS"

If there is no gear in there then you are onto the problem...

UNLESS... You mentioned that you have a Speed-Cal.
IF your transmission has been replaced with a 99-04 type it will have that OSS and no gear. The Speed-Cal will translate the signal to the correct number of pulses generated by a VSS which your speedometer was designed for.

What your saying sounds right, but the speedometer has been working (without a gear on the sensor) for a couple of months. This is the second time my speedometer has quit and I thought about that gear the first time it happened. I pulled the sensor and turns out there was no gear. A buddy of mine works at a ford dealership and the mechanic there said there wasn't supposed to be any gears on those sensors after 93.

Ok, a 94/95 transmission would not have said Tremec on the side.

It is looking more like you have a 99-04 V-6 transmission.

Does the speed sensor cable connect STRAIGHT in towards the transmission, or is it at a RIGHT-ANGLE?

Or the number off of the aluminum tag on a tail housing bolt.

That 99+ V-6 T-5 will probably be tagged 1352-260.

This just about has to be what he has...

So, we have an intermittent Speedometer.
The Cluster was replaced.

Then the OSS sender, the Speed-Cal, or some wiring in between would remain to be suspect...

Sorry I have no pics of the transmission. I won't have time to look at that tailshaft tag until maybe this sunday. I'll see if I can do it any sooner.

Also, if I have to break hard or I disengage the clutch while braking the engine stalls. Just thought I'd put that out there just in case it helps narrow down the issue. It only does this when the speedo isn't working.

Actually that is a clue. The pulses from the speedometer sender are passed to the engine computer to tell it if the car is in motion or just idling around, so yes, if it is confused it may do the wrong thing!
