Hi to all I am new to this site so please bear with me if posting in wrong place. I just purchased a 1991 LX 2.3l auto for my son. It was owned by a 91 yr old gent who bought it new and it only has 91,000 Km or 55,000 miles. The car looks mint and went through safety and etest no problems other than the originaal Exhaust need to be changed. Was always serviced at the ford dealership. The problem is that when the car is cold and you start it there is aloud knocking noise from the engine. It last until the car warms up than goes away. You can shut it off for 5 – 10 minutes no noise, leave it sit until the car completely cools its back. Thanks for any help on this problem
Its your Hydrolic Lash Adjusters, they are going bad
My 92lx is making the same noise.....only not real loud, but too much for me. Looks like I am fixing to replace something.
If the cam followers and cam are worn, would the lash adjusters pump up enough after getting warm to compensate for the excessive clearances? And, would those excessive clearances make a similar noise? Prolly best to replace cam, followers, and lash adjusters!
Anyhow, looks like I am fixing to find out.....never been into a 2.3 before...or that I can remember
Thanks for the information, this morning it was minus 25 and the car the car started first try but the knocking was real loud and lasted for about 5 minutes, and sounded like it was more in the exughst. The car ran like it had a carb with choke on. Then the knocking gradually quiet and then quit as the engine warmed up, then car drove great. With only 50,000 miles, which is the best way to go a rebuilt, head or just change the lifters etc.
