it is probably just a designation like in the Ford trucks. I mean seriously what does XLT stand for?

Extreme Luxury Touring, is what that stands for.

"the "xlt" is simply a trim package designation Ford used.It was used on the trucks and suv's only. It is,generally speaking, the highest level of creature comforts offered on them with the exception of the "Eddie Bauer" package."

I think LX was the badge ford gave their to their base model cars. It may have menat LuXury, but I doubt it....I think it's more along the lines of Less Xtra crap.

....yeah I'm not a GT fan, I like my cars light....remove the spare tire well, aluminum in as many places as I can afford, etc.

Remember '82 ... there was various trim levels
L (base), GL, GLX (Ghia) and GT then GL and GLX were dropped in '84 replaced by LX and in 85, there was no longer a L trim.

So yes ... LX was a luxury package but ended as the base trim.
I don't think it has anything to do with the Luxury word though ... those letters where how Ford Europe ranked the trim levels before Ford US adopt the system.
