Wrong, wrong, wrong! 85-1/2s had 205 horsepower and 86s had 200 horsepower. Mugger had it correct!
I wrote that backwards, 205 & 200 respectively, but again...

that is the way Ford rated it for marketing. There are no differences in the computer or fuel curves, injectors, intake, exhaust, turbo, etc. Go to http://www.svoca.com/mainframe.html and learn a little.

Default I knew that !

140cilx - I knew that, I was clarifying for those that didn't know. There is a lot of SVO mis-information out there. Much of it from folks that don't know SVOs and/or haven't owned one. I've owned one since 1986 and have owned one of every model change over the years. And yes, the 1985-1/2s were rated higher than the 86s. Some say marketing was the reason, others say the 86s were rated different due to the lower octane fuel they were set up for (91 versus 93). The bottom line is that no one seems to know for sure. The EEC computers are supposed to be the same for both years, so that would support the marketing idea.

first of all i would suggest that you attempt to find a comp prep car of 851/2 or 86. then, the svo wasnt concerned withe 5.0 which it can beat rather handily. what brought on its demise was the extra $5,000.00 it cost to buy one off the lot!
research does a lot!

hey .851/2 and 86 were the same in actual h/p. the rating came due to the difference in gasoline octaine rating. if i were to look for an svo i would look for the following in order:
1 851/2 svo comp prep
2. 86 comp prep.
these were the least of the production models.

I agree the 85.5 was rated the highest HP. That's a fact!

Well how much are you willing to spend on an SVO?

Do you want an all original w/low miles?
Do you want a highly modified one thats no where near stock?
Do you want a beater you need to sink some major coin into to restore?

Do you want to buy my 1986 1C with the original Godyear Gatorbacks, 32,144 original miles, damn near all original. The only changed parts are the lowering springs(originals sold with), mufflers, radiator(original sold with needs recore) and hoses, and the windows are tinted.

Default Svo

Well the rarest SVO is a 85.5 comp prep svo. I should know I have one of them. It is said that there are only 10 made of the 85.5 comp prep svo. What a comp prep is, it has things deleted from the factory. Somethings are A/C, no radio and the anttena, no power windows and locks. This was the closest to race ready you could get. The only things u had to do to it was a roll cage, a 4 or 5 point harness and a fire exstiguister. One other thing the 85.5 had the highest horse power rated of them all at 205 hp and 249 ft/tq. whtch means the fastest 0-60 was done in 6.6 seconds

What color is your comp-prep? And are you going to the SVO Reunion this weekend?
Color is another consideration. There are some very rare colors!
4E: Dark Sage; 85.5 and 86= less than 20 total
7B: Dark Shadow Blue; 85.5 and 86 = 71 total
And leather interior is rarer than cloth on any given color
And then there is the "spoiler delete" which exchanged a GT spoiler for the SVO Bi-Plane. Fairly rare as well
So an 86 4E or 7B, comp prep, with leather, and spoiler delete would be the holy grail (if it even existed)
There is a pic of my 85-1/2 SVO next to my 05 GT in my Gallery

Any SVO is a good SVO. the horsepower differences were practically all ECU related. if you dont like the 1984.5 SVO power output, swap in a later model SVO PE ECU. or better yet, re-pin and go with an LA2 or LA3 for manual tranny SVO's (or LB2 or LB3 for Auto Cars) These computers are found in Late Model Turbo Coupes (1987-88) and go to town with some happy mods... Header... Bigger turbo... Port and polish... Possibilities are endless with the SVO or any 2.3T Powered Car.

I have Seen numbers go as high as 300+ HP with a turbo 2.3L car. and for a lot less $$$ than the Honda "Ricer" "Fart Can" "Bumble Buggy" "Grocery Cart" Guys put out just to get STOMPED by my Merkur XR4Ti!!! LOL

My merkur isnt hitting any more than its 175HP but it sure whips hondas into shape real quick. It may not be an SVO but it is a turboford 2.3L. so before you guys scream Import at me? it is a Ford at least!!!

LOL

long story Short... an SVO is an SVO (looks change very slightly from year to year)... unless you plan on leaving it COMPLETELY STOCK!

It is a white 85.5 comp prep here. I just put on 80 k here and now I am going to start to try to restore it. The interior is in excellent condition just the body has so surface rust under the doors and so on the hatchback. I got it from a guy in town here. He did keep the interior great but I think he slacked on the engine a bit. It still runs stronger at 10 and 15 psi though
