We have a 1988 Mustang 2.3L LX convertible. Occasionly when the car is started cold, the enine smokes black sooty smoke, the exhaust smells awful and it idles poorly. If you drive the car for a while, the problem usually goes away. If you kill the engine and restart after having driving a while, the problem goes away.
Anyone have any suggestions?
It sounds like the car is runnig rich (blake smoke = too much fuel). with it running rich it is probably over working the cat which is probably why it smells bad.

also what kind of spark plugs are you running? because certain plugs run cooler and will give you a rough start and black smoke also.

Try replacing the ECT (Engine Cooling Temperature) sensor (if it is a fuel injected car).
The ECT works to tell the EEC how to schedule fuel with relation to engine temperature. Normally a cold start should have a richer A/F ratio, and sometimes the ECT will lean waaay over to the pig-rich side of things as well.
I have already changed the coolant temp sensor as well as the air charge sensor. The weird thing is that the car will run fine for weeks and then the problem returns, stays for a week or so and then goes away again.
