I oddly have some knowledge here about this matter. I am dealing with the same issue with my 1988. The compressor type is the HR980 compressor used on quite a few Ford vehicles from 1982-1990. The problem with these little buggers is the fact that, not only are they no longer made by ANYONE, but they are also non-rebuildable due to the fact that they are pinch-welded shut after assembly. Finding one new in the USA is tough, tough, tough. In Malta, they probably don't exist anymore. Hopeless? Nope. In 1990, the 2.3L mustang got a different compressor. It is rebuildable and is the 10P15C model. What you will need for this conversion on your car is fairly basic and simple. You will need to A/C compressor bracket from a 90-93 2.3L mustang, and the hose set (the high and low side hoses, along with the drier come as one unit), along with the 10P15C compressor. Put the bracket on, attach the compressor to the bracket, attach the hoses to the compressor, and you're on your way! The compressor has an adapter plate on top of it that does not come with the compressor or the new line set. You will need to find one of these. Not to hard. See if whoever you get the bracket off of has everything else you need. It's common on EBay. Hope this helps out.
