Default Re-dying cloth interior..?

I have heard of a few people doing this to there interior and I really want to try it. My interior is very faded on the seats and I would really like to get them back to the factory look. Has anybody come across this?

I have heard mixed results. What about reupholstering the seats. CJ Pony Parts (and maybe The Paddock) has the seat covers for your car. It can't be that expensive to do, and will look 10 times better.

I was looking at the re-appolsrty kits but they were kind of pricey. I figured the dye would be the cheapest and easiest way to mkae the seats look good again. How hard is it to re-appolster the seats? I also saw that you could buy new seat foams also. If I go that route, I'll get the new foams with the appolstry. If I have the opportunity, I might as well make the most of it.

How much do you want to spend? The nicest job is to reupholster the seats. I hired a guy to do the seats in my 71. If you want to go for the dye, just make sure you get one that will not bleed. Your white tee shiet could become the color of your interior real quick.

I'm not sure on how much I can spend because I don't even have an estimate. lol. If I were to dye them what do I have to get and how would I apply it? Spray can or something? If I have to I'll let the seats dry for a few days before I put them back in my car. Having the dye come off on my cloths would be th last thing I want.

How much did it cost you to re-appolster all of the seats in your 71? I might just save up and get the whole interior re-done. That would cost a grand or two tho..

I wouldn't suggest dying the interior. Save $ for a nice interior, pick the materials and colors you want, and buy it, or get the seats recovered. Dying the seats can leave a heck of a mess and look even worse a week later. My dad did that to his '72 el camino, dyed every interior piece grey, looked terrible and what a mess!

You'll be much happier in the the end as well with a freshened up interior!

Thanks for the advice 05Muscle, I'll look into getting the seats re-covered. How exactly do you take off the seat covers and put new ones one? Are they staples or something? I'm going to ask a local interior place how much they want to re-cover the seats.

Default What???

I dyed the seats and panels of a 1990 Mustang in black and they still look good. If you just do a slapstick job you'll just turn out getting bad results but if you take the time to do it right it'll look good.

Buy 2 quarts and a pint of the color you want.

Shampoo the interior parts, seats, carpet and dash.

Let the parts air dry for a day.

Wipe down the door panels and dash with degreaser and let dry.

With a spray gun using a 1.4 to 1.6 tip spray on the first coat of dye very lightly and let it dry for 10 to 15 minutes. Then spray on a second light coat...these two coats are are to create the BITE in the material so that you can spray on more coats of dye.

The third coat should be a medium build layer. Let that dry for 15 to 20 minutes and then spray on the final fourth coat evenly.

Let the 4th coat dry completely, usually 15 to 20 minutes.

Lay out ALL of the interior parts to make sure everything has the same color tone. If one or more parts aren't the same color, either dark or light, spray everything with a final very light 5th coat evenly. When you have everything laid out together you can see if there are differences in the color tone and spraying the 5th light coat will be easy and quick!

Thanks for the run down Lowered. I was wondering how the results would differ compared to scarlet red. I think black would be easier to spray on the red though. Sounds like I have a lot of work ahead of me. What kind of paint do I use?

Black is easier to spray over any color. Find a local paint shop specific to Autobody paint. The brand name 'SEM' is good for interior work.
