Yes I drove manual for the first time today.. Some of you may be laughing since I don't know.. but I learned how to drive an automatic in school when i was 15 and they only taught automatic. So for my first car I was looking for a 5 speed 2.3 Mustang but was only able to find a clean 91 auto. So now that I got another Mustang on September 1st.. what better car to learn stick than on a 2.3T 84 svo.. Gonna keep the boost real low for now, I don't want to have to lose control. I don't have anyone to teach me how to drive it hands on so I'm learning by doing some research online and basically just going to wing it I guess.
I had to pull out my drive way so I ended up stalling it when going from neutral to reverse. Started it up again and got it going this time. The sound of the svo is really intimidating.. Then I stalled it once again when going from reverse, to neutral then going to first.. BUT I got it going then it all just came to me, clutch, shift to 2nd and so on.. When I got it to 3rd I started to hear the turbo, atleast I think it was the turbo since it was doing this loud whistling noise.
The experience was just incredible. I just have to get used to it driving it in on the streets now. If you guys can give me some tips on what to do/not to do with the manual transmission, I really appreciate it! Like for when stopping at the top of a hill.. I don't want to go backwards..(it doesn't have an E-brake) Atleast not yet. Thanks again for any tips guys, hope I didn't bore you with my experience.

Congrats on the manual!
Hill starts were hard for me at first, but it will come with time, just practice and have fun! Listen to the car, it will tell you what to do.
For hills, practice and it will come with time. I grew up on autos and when I started driving a manual I sucked at starting on a hill. Just practice and you will learn how far to let the clutch out, how much gas, ect...
Good luck!

When I taught my wife to drive stick, she kept telling me "everyone's laughing at me!" and getting flustered. I think that mentality is the biggest roadblock to learning to drive stick.
I told her that anyone laughing at her had never learned to drive stick, because if they had, they wouldn't be laughing!
But, like Bpcephus said, it's mostly about practice and getting to hear/feel when to shift, and being able to feel the clutch.
Different vehicles have different clutches, too. When I got my Stang, I had been driving my pickup for years, and you barely had to push the clutch in to be able to shift. Of course, I was stalling my shiny new car left and right for a few days until I got used to it.

Ive been driving manual since i was 11 mostly trucks though. They are both right its gunna come with practice. I used to just go to my highschool parking lot and practice learn the best time to shift etc. just listen to your car i dont look at the tach I am able to tell when to shift and how fast im going for the most part. Its so much funner driving a 5 speed huh? Hey i dont cruise control, I control the cruise

Yeah I got to practice some more, maybe in the early mornings when there isn't to many cars, just so I can get the hang of it. So that way if I stall, I wont have a line of cars behind me creating a road block.
It really is a lot more fun, I actually feel like I'm "driving" for the first time.

I agree, a manual is more fun.
I say go out in the country, the middle of no where, and practice where there is nobody riding your bumper, nobody to get you in a hurry, and nobody notices if there are a few black marks left at the end of the day.

I was lucky cause I had a nice long driveway to practice in when I got mine. It is way more fun to drive though. It's always funny when you get back in a car with an auto and you can't find the clutch.

Haha yeah tell me about it, I actually pressed on the dead pedal of my 91 auto by accident..
And, some automatics have a wider brake pedal since they don't have a clutch. I've gone for the clutch in an auto, and caught the edge of the brake and bounced people off the dashboard!

I've sure done that after a long 3 hr drive coming up to the first toll booth on the interstate. Had trouble also with that missing shifter but you'll get the hang of it. I learned with a three on the tree.
Noe, going to UTI down there? At least you don't have too many hills to worry about do you?
Dave

I planned on going to UTI at first but found another college nearby where I could drive there and drive back home. Its College of Lake County, and much cheaper than UTI. I thought its more reasonable to go to it being that its closer and not as expensive.
It's still a 45 min drive but I guess thats a good thing since I'll need all the practise I can get. There aren't that many hills, its all highway but there are some up and down slopes once I'm out of the highway.
