If you want to do an exhaust now, just have the factory muffler and resonator removed, and a glasspack or cheap turbo muffler (from Thrush or Cherry-Bomb) welded in. Though they both sound kind of redneck on any V8 car, they sound surprisingly good on a 2.3L Mustang, I ran a 24" long Thrush glasspack on my '74 Mustang II and a Thrush Turbo muffler on my '88 LX. Neither sounded anything like a 5.0, but they didn't sound like a ricer either.
