I was thinking about putting a 5.0 in at christmas, but I;m buyin a new mustang before then. So I want to build up my 1989 2.3 liter mustang which one would be better to put in?
its really all just preference. a supercharger will keep building boost in higher rpms where as a turbo is instant power but they kinda slack off on the power when you get into the higher rpms.

Do you have to get an emissions test for your 89? If you do I'd go with a supercharger, If not get a turbo. Also, a properly sized turbo will produce thru out your engines RPM range.
alright just out of curiosity jamesco5.0... do you really prefer the turbo over a supercharger? i dunno i mean everyone has their personal preferences and i had a turbo on a fox body and i had it tuned but i just wasnt pleased with it. i mean it was great but i didnt feel like it pulled as hard as the supercharger in the highr rpm range. plus ive always been a bigger fan for the supercharger anyway. hows yours perform?

The MP t70 pulls very well with my set up! From about 2700 to 5600 it's awesome. Drop's off after that, but it did that before the turbo anyway. I just know that a properly mapped turbo can achieve high RPM's if that is the "said goal". As for the supercharger's go, I personally have never used one, but I do not have a problem with them (very reliable, good power, etc.). My friend has a twin screw on his 96 GT and it pulls right away, but I can still run him down with the turbo at the same PSI.
Who made your turbo? What size was it? I know it makes a big difference.
I had heard that belt slippage was a problem with the centrifugals, true or not?
First of all, there is no supercharger kit for these engines. Someone posted up a couple of months ago that there was, but the one out there for the 2.3 is NOT for the Lima 2.3.
Next, a supercharger is only 50% efficient, where as turbocharging is 70% efficient.
Here's a project my friend is working on. It's a 2.3 with a T-Bird SC blower. Lots of fabrication. It runs right now but still tuning the SDS computer. Enjoy...
Holy moly! Thats amazing! lol. I have always thought that a super charger would be awesome on a little 4 cylinder. I would love to do something like that, but I would also do the turbo 2.3 first, because they would (I would very strongly emagine) have the over all better proformance (save for low end) and speed.
After all that work it will be relatively easy to switch to a turbo. So we might do a back to back (Sorta) dyno comparison. I figure the turbo will win (At same boost level) but we will get an idea how the power bands vary.
Some more pics....
That's my Maverick in the shop in front of Super Pinto.
He made a custom bracket tray type thing It looks pretty professional. Used a late model Ranger crank pulley and frustrating hours trying to line everything up. Lets see if I have any more pics...
Yep turbos pickup where superchargers leave off. Easiest thing to run would be a centrifugal type then again you could always have a custom intake made for a roots/twin screw type.
