So I was talking to a buddy of mine at work today. He had an 01 Mustang that he pretty much tricked out and has been around Mustangs most of his life. We went outside on a smoke break and he looked inside my car for the first time. He noticed a light I have above my rear view mirror. It is attached by a "clip" if you will. When released it can be brought down and swiveled in pretty much any direction to point the light at the end. Now, this thing hasnt worked since I bought the car. I just need to get off my butt and investigate it. So he saw it, and asked me if it was something I installed. I told him that no, as far as I knew, it was an original part of the car. He went on to say that it is a rare feature that was put in certain Mustangs. My question is, is that is it a rare thing or he just making up crap to say? I will try to get a pic of it in the next couple of days upload it so you guys can see what I am talking about. Sorry to rant, I am just interested in this.

Yep, that would be it. Mine is a tan color, but that is the light.
Well then your friend is kind of correct, as far as rarity because those map lights were put on the 84'-86' Mercury Capri's, ASC Mclaren edition. They ended up having a bunch left over from production so they sold the remaining quantity at both Ford and Mercury dealers as an aftermarket component for third generation Mustangs and second generation Capri's. Each dealer that had them only got a limited number because they were no longer in production and when they sold out, that was it.

Well...I feel special anyhow...rofl. Now just to get it working. I am assuming that the power is running through the headliner. My whole inside needs to be restored, so I think I will add that to the list. Thanks for the follow up!

They were only available for a few years. Depending on the state you live in and which plant your Mustang came from determined whether you had a map light available at the time of purchase.
Sorry to respond so late. I think I am going to remove the light when I get the interior redone. Its not really a necessary item as far as I can tell at this point.

If it's a working unit, I will take it off your hands if you don't want it. Let me know.
