Default Your opinions on a 79/80 cobra

I will start off by saying that I am ford crazy along with the rest of my family. We have 4 ford trucks and a excursion. We have also had a few mustangs along the way, we had 2 93' gt's with the 5.0 they were sweet. Anyways to my point, I am seriously looking into getting either a 79 or 80 cobra. The guy said they haven't been started for 5 years and he only wants 2 grand a peice. They look like with just a little love they would run no problem. But i know nothing about those cobras. My plans would be to restore the extiror/interior and hop up the drive train. Any thaughts are welcome. oh yah is that to tall of an order for a kid? because i dont have much experence with any of this and this will almost be a learner type prodject for me. Well thank you all so much

What motors are in them? If you are after a V8 the 79 is the way to go since it will be a 302. The 80 V8s were 255s and like crazy aunts locked in the attic we don't like to talk about them much.

However if they are the early carbed turbo 2.3s it doesn't matter they'll both run like crap.

IMO the 80 body (Borrowed from the 79 Pace Car) is more attractive.

If they are 2.3s (Is that why you posted here?) Maybe retro fitting a F.I. 2.3 out of an 83 and up turbo Bird or Stang would be worth it. Intercooled models can make 200+ to the wheels with ease. My SVO got 28 MPG (4.10 gears) and turned mid 13s at 108 or so on crappy street tires.
