Default Rear End Carrier

I came across a problem with my '81 Mustang. I have an axle seal leaking and called the local Ford dealer to get an expert opinion on exactly how to remove the axle from the housing.

The tech. proceded to tell me I had to remove the rear cover, remove the rod that holds the axle C-clips in place and how to remove them.

Boy was I surprised, this rear end doesn't have a normal carrier. NO spider gears. A spoll instead. All I had to do is take the four nuts off the bearing retainer and pull the axle out.

It also has a 4.10 ring and pinion.

My question is, is this the correct rear end and gear set? I hope someone else has run into this.

Thanks in advance for any responces,

Bill

A previous owner has installed the gears and spool,as well as the c-clip eliminater kit.It is a great set-up.

That's neat to know. I saw that spool and thought something was sure wrong. I'm a Mopar guy and I like the idea of pulling the axles with out getting into the ring and pinion area.

Thanks for your input,

Bill

Slow, yea it's slow. It's only got 160,000 miles on it. The body is in pretty good condition and the interior is very good. I'll post a pic when I get some.

Mine is a 4 speed.

Regards,

Bill

I like the 4-speed also. There is one thing I want to do to it, get some interior lights. The original owner removed the headliner and took the domelight out, along with both door switches. I am not going to get a headliner soon but I sure am thinking about the dome light and switches.
