Default Just installed Sony Xplode Headunit

I picked up a stero kit from Sony that I found at Wal Mart. I figured since I was getting gifts for Christmas, Sally probabley deserves a couple too. I paid 100$ for it so I wasn't expecting much but I'm impressed, it sounds pretty D*** good seeing on how I havn't installed the speakers yet. I got two two way door speakers, two three way 6x9's and the Xplode Headunit with remvoable faceplate and remote. The install wasn't that bad after I got the wiring kit that was just plug in, I did some soudering to make it permant but it was unnesscary. I shortly there after found out that the antenna cable on these cars are way too short and my drivers side back speaker is blown. I put in the new ACDC cd cranked up the bass and was pretty happy with the results. I was wondering though is there anyway to put the 6x9's in the back mine look like 6x8's or somthing not quite the same size.

Yeah it would be easy to install 6x9's in place of the 6x8's. All you need to do is:
- use the new speaker to make a template on a sheet of paper
- lay the template over the existing speaker hole
- mark the areas that need to be trimmed/cut to allow the bigger speaker to fit properly
- cut these areas out with a hacksaw blade (just use a single blade and wrap a rag around the end so you don't cut your hand)
- drill new mounting holes if necessary
- re-use the mounting hardware from the older speaker and plug them in

That's it!

are you sure that the 6x9's will still fit? i would figure they would it a little deeper back, and the 6x8's i have in my car seemed to be a real snug fit still.

The length and width of a speaker doesn't necessarily affect it's depth. Some things that affect the size of a speaker are: it's intended purpose, optimal operating range, current, voltage, frequency etc.

Default It can work

I actually have that same exact system in my car. I cut the back speaker holes to fit the 6 by 9's. Be aware that you are modifying the original metal in the car. I thought about this afterward and wasnt sure if I was happy about it. After having this setup in for about 7 months now, I am very very happy with the outcome. Seeing as how the mustang interior is pretty tight , you most likely wont need the remote that comes with it.

All in all, I am glad you are happy with your purchase and hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Default Side Note

This is an addon to my previous quote. I dont know if it was just my car, but I had a power issue with the stereo. I would turn it up to a point and jam out and the stereo would shut off and restart in over and over again. It became very very annoying. It turned out to be some kind of a short in the yellow, or I think it was the reserve power line, and wasnt getting steady juice. Not knowing too much about stereo stuff I couldnt really trace back the problem. I ended up running power straight to the stereo from the battery via a toggle switch. It works like a dream now and doesnt drain extra juice from the battery. I dont know if you will have that problem, but I wanted to throw it in there. Good luck!

Whatever you had the wiring hooked up to before was getting pissed off at the stereo. My guess is there was a switch being overloaded in the same line as the stereo. Since you ran it directly to the battery, did you also install an inline fuse? If you didn't, your head unit could easily short out and catch on fire, no BS.

I have the same system. I love it, I used all new wire's for the speaker's though and it made it sound a million time's better.

Thanks for the input. I'll have to get working on putting those 6x9s tommorow. As far as wiring my father who was an interior specailst during the 80's (gee I just happen to have an 89) for 6 yrs installed it we left two wires hanging unconnected I can't remeber which ones but I trust that they weren't needed. I'll have some pics posted up shortly of the monster stero box I'm building two 10in subs and 1 12in.
