Default sheet metal roof for convertible

ok so i have this idea. i want to make a removable top for my car out of some type of sheetmetal. i want it to be able to fold up to fit in my backseat or trunk so it can go back on at anytime. if anyone has attempted this or has ever seen any plans to make one i would appreciate any comments. thanks

Not a new idea. Look at old Fords and Lincolns. They had a metal roof that folded up into the trunk.

To make you to fit a Mustang would be a huge - and expensive - undertaking. The Mustang trunk is so small, it might not even work.

You could also make a removable hard top out of fiberglass. Take a look at the old Corvette's, '56 T-Bird, and even the LeMans top for the Shelby Cobra. That would be a hand made part, and you would not be able to fold it up.

well im not exactly talking about something that would be hooked up to the conv. top motor. just something that would have to be done manually and that is completely removable. so it can just lay in the backseat or be left at home for more room.

Yeah, getting one to be electric or hydraulic would be areal feat of engineering. Just getting it to fold up small enough to get it into the trunk would be a real challange.

Have you considered a Targa or T top? That would be much easier, and would fit in the trunk pretty easy. You'de have to start with a hard top, though.

ya ive thought of that before but i have a drop top and no money to buy another car. maybe even just a top that was one solid piece that didnt fold up that could be secured to the car while the vert top was down. so i could take it off and put the regular top up if needed

I'v seen people make things like that in their garage out of fiberglass. Solid, light weight, "easy" to work with. Far beyond my skills, but it can be done.

There is a company that makes a kit for the Classic 65-68 Mustang to have a fiberglass folding roof, you could look at the way they built that one, and then make a mold for a fox body.

What if you went to a wreckers and chopped the roof and all needed panels off another mustang, Then fabricated up a detatch system, then have it hinged so you can fold it down to fit in the trunk.
Just a thought. Good luck!

Okay there isnt a removable roof thats not canvas that will just sit in the backseat. boB in his first post is referring to cars that are hardtop convertibles. I dont see whats wrong with the top it has now ofcourse I have I guess the feb09 issue of 5.0 mag and there is a roadster(topless) mustang in there. I'm not fond of convertibles(Dakota excluded) but it was nice.
