Default Tach barely working?

I have a '93 2.3 and recently the tachometer began to only work intermittenly.
I never didn't work at all, it just would stay between 500 and 1100, instead of reading accurately.
Also, the check engine light comes on when it's malfuntioning, then goes off when the tach works right.
Anybody know what to check?
I haven't tried anything yet.

mine was doing the same thing , it turned out to be the ignition mod, was expensive,$200, you can get one from a bone yard, ranger one is the same 88-97 with the 2.3 , mustang 91-93 2.3 , i bet when its acting up all of your spark plugs are not firing, need to check all 8 plugs, at least 2 will be dead, let me know bigG

Thanks Bigg.

I will check, but the engine runs the same. No miss or loss of power...I can't tell any change at all.

Mine did not work at all when I bought it, and then I picked up one at Auto zone for like $130 I think and then I was good to go.
