Okay, relatively new to the board, but not to turbos. The turbo bug returned here last year when I purchased a SECA 650 Turbo ( My 4th turbo bike over a 20+ year span.) It brought back some great memories and got me back into turbo power again. I have also owned an SVO that I poured some serious sweat over and a TurboCoupe for a brief time.
Well, I am back into Turbo Fords again after I found a fella' looking for a 4 wheeler and some cash in trade for a 1984 Mustang GT. I answered the ad and he agreed to meet. I went to the house and popped the hood. To my surprise I found a 1988 TC motor, inter-cooler and all under the hood! It ran, but erratic. I asked the guy to borrow some tools to settle it out. He shows back up with a ratty pair of pliers and a couple screwdrivers covered in dirt. I knew this was going to be a mission to save the little GT from shear doom. I adjusted the car to where it would idle a little smoother and I jumped in and took off. It was a blast. When I got back, he mentioned that his truck was running rough and blowing black smoke. I took a look and sure enough, the carb was shot. Well I had a rebuilt Quadrajet carb at home. I brought it out on my next vist and installed it, the truck ran great and he was happy as all hell. The deal was done!
I got the little beast home, quirks and all! I found you guys here and from there turboford. I have gotten a great deal of knowledge that I forgot or just plain never knew about. Since getting the car tuned up and settled down, she is a deadly little sleeper. Runs great and plenty fast/quick for now.
Searching the FORUMS got me to thinking about building this thing up a little, but my budget is limited. (High maintenance wife and 7 kids, 5 still at home and all play some sort of sport.) So "CRAIGSLIST is my friend. I started looking for parts cars, any turbo parts really. I found a SAAB 9000 Turbo for sale on craigslist for $600, so I went to check it out. Overall it is in great shape! The motor runs pretty good (May have headgasket leak though). It has a FMIC and BOV, plus the wheels fit the
Stang and look real nice on it. I offered $300 and he said it is yours! So I drug it home! I plan on using this stuff for the little GT. I was in the process of getting things ready to remove the parts from the SAAB when I looked and realized the turbo was new! Damn what luck! I thought I had had my run of craigslist kharma, then two days ago, I came across an XR4TI for $300.
I went to check it out and low and behold, it has a Stinger header, a big GT turbo, 3" exhaust and manual boost controller! DAMN! No way! Car itself is straight but worn. I drug it home. (Mama- aka the wife) was none to happy with this one either. She doesn't like any of my cars! DD is a '74 Mercury Cougar, now who wouldn't like to have one of those!.
Anway, I have invested a total of $600 in cash, a Chinese 4 wheeler that we got alot of use out of and the kids no longer rode and a Quadrajunk carb that I got in another craigslist deal. I have well over $2000 worth of parts and a running and driving car that doesn't even bat an eye on start up, gets down the road smartly and gets my old heart pumping with some new enthusiasm again.
I appreciate the knowledge you guys and girls have shared. I will post pics as things take place. Right now, I am just too damn excited about the possibilities with the "CRAIGSLIST" build.
