Exclamation Just out of curiosity.

Hey guys. I have a question about the 2.3l in the mustang. Do all 2.3s vibrate a lot? This one, when it idles seems to cause a lot of vibrating. Is there a reason for that? I am used to a 3.8 liter pontiac bonneville, and don't know if that is common for the 4 cylinder mustangs. And also, does anybody know what transmission is? I am not sure what transmission they used for the 89 lx 2.3s, and would like to know what all it can handle.
Thanks everybody.

the first question is what is it idling at my 2.3 idles at aroud 800rpm and vibrates a good bit.
The tranny you should have is a T5 same as the 5.0 but the gear ration inside it is made to give you more torque what ive heard is that you can put a 5.0 engine in your car and then throw a short shifter and you should be ok but from what ive heard is that if you go over 150hp the trannys going to go out.

oh yea mine shakes like a washing machine right at 850rpms.

i doubt you can throw a 5.0 at your t-5 in your 2.3 itll probably explode. im sure they used different trans.

as for tranny names, advice, how they work, what they can handle, etc refer to everyone else.

this is my stop.

Yes. Because of wife. This is "her car". Because a lot of drag racers of 2.3 are going to automatic becuase of 2.3 clutchs don't hold up. Also a automatic does not lose boost between shifts. But you can make a custom 5.0 flywheel to 2.3 crank pattern and use a adapter plate to use a 5.0 bellhousing to get around that problem. But note it is a C-4 not a A4LD.

Yeah that would be a good thought. my suspension needs a ton of help also. I am buying a higher up suspension though, because Dollar general called and I start monday!! so I can finally start pouring money into the mustang! I'm thrilled. First up will be tires.

the 5.0 and 2.3 t-5's are not the same at all. the input shafts have different sizes and the bearing retainers are different sizes. it takes a little work getting a 2.3l t5 to work on a 5.0. i love fords but ford auto overdrive tranny's are junk.

What will I need to replace in the transmission for it to handle the higher performance of a 302?

i don't know trannys that well, i just know it takes a bit to get one to bolt to a 302. i've heard of some guys using 2.3 t-5's on 5.0's on road course track's cause of the gearing with no problems, but launching at the drag strip would grenade one.
