Parts are still available for your 78 2.3L. They can be ordered through any of the parts retail chains. As for emissions stuff, outside of EGR valves and PCV valves, most stuff can only be found in junkyards anymore. You can replace your carburetor with a Weber DFEV if you are having a hard time finding parts for your Motorcraft 5200 that's on there now. The 5200 is based off the DFEV, so the DFEV is a DIRECT BOLT-ON replacement. Also, replace your camshaft and followers with the better roller cam and followers that can be found in 91-93 Mustang 2.3L's and 88-97 Ranger 2.3L's.

You can get a header from a 79 2.3 Mustang or a Ranger. IF your true to the 140 you can try and find a OFFY 4bbl intake. Check out the stickied topics.

I would say to rebuild your 2.3, add a header and free flowing exhaust a roller cam from the 91- 93 mustang or a 94 ranger, offy 4bbl as mentioned before, and a Holley 4160 390cfm carburetor. That's pretty much my setup and it should get you started.

I found that in the IIs to make this work you have to mount the 4bbl carburetor "upside down" and modify the throttle cable mount in order to use the stock throttle cable and flatten the wire loom clip on the drivers side of the valve cover to make room for the choke. It is definitely worth it though. With my setup, just bolting it on and getting it running took about 3 seconds off of my 0-60.
