Where is the motor? If it is in the car already, you can use a transmission jack. It looks like a mini scissor-lift with a circular pad. You can also use it to jack up just about anything. It is a good idea to tie the transmission to the jack.

Actually, now that I think of it, you can use that jack no matter where the engine is: on a tire or stand, held up up by an engine lift, etc.

I think that the jacks are about $100-$200. I am sure you can find a used one somewhere.

I went to a hardware store. Got some long cheep (soft) bolts and cut off the heads. Then screwed them loosely into the engine block creating "guide rods". There were very helpful in getting the engine hanging from a hoist aligned up with the transmission still in the vehicle. Once the engine was matched up, I then removed the bolts protruding through the transmission bolt holes by hand (because they were not tight) and replaced them with the proper bolts. Worked good.

not that tough. just use a normal jack and jack it up there and bolt it on. at least that has worked for me two different times already

Have we not said that it would be easier to just put the engine and transmission into the car together? Plus, you get to see if the clutch has any life in it still. It really isn't that difficult. I did it earlier this year for the first time in my life and it took me 10 hours to do (take tranny out, install new clutch kit and put a new tranny back in). So with the engine out of the car it should be way easier than that even.

I had a really, really hard time with the bellhousing-to-engine bolts. They are in a really tight area and it was very hard to tighten them. I am actually looking forward to the time when I get my turbo motor all ready because I know that with the engine out of the car it will be really easy to just throw everything in at once. It will be way easier tightening important bolts when your not laying under the car. Just my $.02, and just trying to save a hassle. Good luck whatever you do.

These are contradicting terms, so you should see what the best thing here to do is.
