Should I sell my 1993 Mustang LX hatch 2.3L? Or keep it?
Hey guys! Was wondering if I can get some advice. I have a 1993 Mustang LX 2.3L that I bought as a daily driver for $800. I have it up for sale in a few places, but I'm not sure if I should keep it. I want a faster car, and I drive a Honda now (2008 Honda Fit). Sorry! However, I was thinking about selling the Mustang to get another car that's faster than the 2.3 (Acura Integra, Mazda MX-6 turbo etc) but I kinda wanna keep it and do a FULL resto on it (convert to black interior, fresh paint job, Cobra R wheels and 5.0 swap). I want you guys to convince me to keep it! Or at least tell me if my asking price is too high or too low. NOTE: I'm not trying to sell it on here, because I couldn't find anywhere for that.
I have to admit I don't know much about Mustangs being a Honda guy, but I've been reading. I would totally love it if I could do the above resto, but not sure what would be cheaper in terms of speed. Doing the 5.0 swap in this or saving up for another car altogether (An 1996 Integra GSR putting down 185 HP will run me about $3800, so I need almost $2000 on top of selling the Mustang).

Here's the Mustang I have on the market for sale. Only 104K miles. Asking $2000. Clean title in hand. It is an Illinois title.
Plan on painting the side mirrors flat black. Wiper arm needs to be painted as well. Seats have black seat covers on them. The driver seat is stained because it came from the junk yard, but the other one was tore up and the bracket was broke, so it was gangsta leaned all the way back. Had to drive it home like that.
Features:
4 cylinder, 2.3L engine
Sunroof
Automatic transmission with over drive
Cruise
A/C
Alloy wheels
After market cassette deck
Six speakers (factory)
The good:
All the lights and signals work. Engine runs strong. Does not burn oil or smoke. No rips in seats and no cracks in interior. All the glass is straight, and there's no major rust. Just a spot on the hood from hail chipping the paint real bad. Car has never been wrecked, and low original miles. I have extra coil packs and belt pulley that will be included. Two tires for it as well. The ones on it don't need to be replaced quit yet. The rear are good and the front have a little life left. The motor is no where near needing to be replaced or overhauled. Body is in great shape, just needs a painting. Car does not over heat. Things I've done: Replaced driver seat, replaced sun visors, new floor mats, replaced hatch supports, replaced serpentine belt, replaced air filter, fuel injector cleaner added to the first tank of gas I put in, replaced wipers and passenger wiper arm, and cleaned the heck outta it. Sat in a car port for like 2 years.
The bad stuff: Exterior has no major stuff, but is showing it's age. The paint is starting to fade on the bumpers and behind rear quarter class. Clear coat is peeling on the roof. The front bumper has paint missing from it (like from years of highway driving) and the spoiler has a slight crack (not noticable till up on it). One of the tail lights doesn't match the other. It was cracked and that's all I could find at the salvage yard. The dome light does not work, as the fuse was removed. Cruise does not work either, probably a vacuum problem. The armrest is missing it's fabric, but I plan on reupholstering it myself using fabric from the original driver seat so it matches. There's a hole somewhere in the exhaust, so it's not as quiet it as it could be.
Worst thing about it is that the door handles need to be replaced. Driver door just doesn't unlock.
Its only alittle high because of the cosmetic issues. if it was running fine and super clean 2k would be fine. i bought mine for 1750 it needed alot...still working on the list but was pretty clean inside...atleast it was before i got it lol. but the body is perfect....ish. so yea. id spruce it up abit before trying to sell it. orrrrr take that 2k you got or whatever and do a 5.0 swap/2.3t swap etc. but in anycase it needs alot of resto if you dont know how or dont have the mechanical knowhow to do a swap (i.e. me, i know i dont) then sell it.
im thinking about selling mine. dun dun dun.

Maybe a good hood from the junk yard and side trim, then a Macco paint job?
Think of me as a guy with 2K in his pocket looking for a nice car.
It's already had at least one Maaco paint job and it's starting to lift. The orange peel on the driver's side is so bad I can see it in the pics. You sure the car wasn't hit?
Along with the typical dents and dings there's a bunch more that need taken care of.
The interior is pretty well wiped out. The carpet is shot, the console has the typical ashtray door problem, plus the arm rest pad is gone.
And those are not the original floor mats laying in the hatch area. They may have been the one's in the car when you bought it, but they weren't the ones in the car when it was new.
Are you 100% sure there are 6 factory speakers in that car? You've had the door panels (which by the way are also no bueno) off the car and seen them?
Based on what you've mentioned previously, and what I've seen myself, here's what your 1800 dollar car needs to make it right.
Exhaust work,
Electrical work (dome light and maybe cruise control)
Paint and body work
Interior work
If you can get someone to give you $1000.00 for it, take it before they change their mind. Someone looking for a project isn't going to pay that much for a foundation and someone looking at that car for basic transportation doesn't have 2K in his pocket.
Sorry dude, that's just my opinion. Good luck with your sale. I hope you prove me wrong.
Agreeing with Chandler on this one... It needs a lot of work, the interior is pretty rotten, and the door panels are not minty as you said because the map pockets are completely wasted. The seats need some serious attention and the arm rest isn't just missing the fabric, it is missing the padding and I am not too sure, but I think it is really hard to replace.
Put $999 on it and say that it can be easily safetied easily and that it would make an awesome project.
I'll leave it up for sale at $1750 and continue to drive and restore it. If someone bites and wants it, so be it. I made a profit. Chances are, no one will buy so by time I'm done restoring the interior and painting the outside, maybe my GF and I will be living together and I'll have extra money to do the swap.

Sound good?
Driving and restoring it is impossible if you are planning on doing bot at the same time... Stick that bad boy in a garage and get to work on it while you drive your honda around.
Start with the body and paint. It's the most time consuming and requires the most downtime outside of powertrain work. The interior can always be broken down into little projects done over a weekend here and there. Say carpet one weekend, then refoam and recover the seats another, then move on to the next.

Steve
its not impossible to restore and drive around. just take a look at my car. i drove and restored mine at the same time. the longest down time that it had was 2 day and thats when i had my engine out and working on it.
