don't know for sure, but I've worked on a '79 2.3 turbo, '93 2.3, and an '89 Ranger w/ 2.3 but they all had standard transmissions. The only hookups to the transmission other than the spedometer and the clutch that I can remember was the backup light switch. It might be a neutral start switch or something, to make sure that you can't start the enging while it's in gear. I don't really know much about the automatics though. You might start there. Or possible get a haynes manual and look at the wiring diagrams
