If you're gonna put an import engine in it, why not put something that:
1. Will actually FIT without a lot of fabrication
2. Is still cool, and still FORD!
I'm talking about the German-built 2.8L V6 that used to terrorize Porsches on the Autobahn. Ford put a seriously detuned version in the Mustang II an Capri, as well as in a small percentage of '79 Mustangs (it was more popular than they had planned, so their available run of 2.8s ran out, forcing them to use Fairmont inline-6s and I6 K-members).
In 1977, the most powerful American version of the 2.8 was released in the John Player Special edition of the Mercury Capri... 139 horsepower... doesn't seem overwhelming, until you realize the 302 in the Mustang II Cobra II that year had 138!
German versions of the 2.8 were regularly in the 175hp range, and Offenhauser, Holley, Pace Setter, and others made all sorts of performance parts for them back in the 70s and 80s including four-barrel intakes and carburetors, much more agressive camshafts (they had solid-lifter cams from the factory, even the gutless American versions) and even a bolt-on turbo kit.
Some parts stores can still get the '79 2.8L motor mounts... and stock 2.8s are plentiful enough in yards (look for the 2.8 in Pintos, Mustang IIs, Bobcats, Couriers, early Rangers, and Capris.
