Default Gear stripped, need help

Here's the deal, I stripped the gear onthe distributor. Dont know how, but I did. Now, I need to replace the gear on the distributor, but I also need to replace the other gear that the distributor turns. My problem is, I dont know what the name is. Please help, I need to know what the gear that the ditributor turns is called.

What weight of oil were you running? (anything over 10w40 is really tempting fate with the 2.3, heavier oil weights or oil thickening additives tend to lead to stripped distributor gears.)

Also, the gear the distrbutor gear was driven by is the gear on the auxilary shaft (it drives the distributor and oil pump), if that's stripped, you'll need a new auxilary shaft (and I'd recommend rebuilding the engine, as when that gear stripped, it caused the oil pump to quit turning while the engine was running, and the debris from the gears stripping would've fallen into the oil pan and been circulated through the engine until the teeth were stripped to the point that the oil pump quit turning.)

I would agree that a teardown for inspection would be necessary but the metal shavings should be stuck in the filter. All oil goes through the filter before the engine.
Chances are, you will still be in good shape, but pull the pan, clean it good. Pull the oil pump and look for metal shaving as they will kill your pump instantly.
Good luck!

Can you recommend a good site to purchase a new auxillary shaft along with the distributor.

My biggest concerns would also be that the shavings could've gotten splashed up onto the piston skirts (seen it happen in other inline engines that've had similar failures) which would lead to further damage. Also, most oil filters have a bypass valve, meaning that not all oil going through the filters actually gets filtered (which is why I use K&N Performance Gold oil filters on ALL of my cars, they filter all of the oil. and also Fram's bypass valve is the worst, as it NEVER closes all the way due to what is basically a design flaw they've never corrected.)

All of that said...
I honestly wouldn't know where to get a "new" auxillary shaft, but that's because I haven't had to look for one, I'd check with your local auto parts stores (mainly the independents, as they tend to have a broader supplier base for rarely purchased parts like that), and if they don't have/can't find you one I'd check with Racer Walsh ( http://www.racerwalsh.com ) or Summit Racing ( http://www.summitracing.com ) and if they didn't have it I'd go searching junkyards as they're almost 100% guaranteed to have one or more. As far as the distributor, junkyard would work, but pretty much any parts store will probably have a rebuilt one either in-stock, or easily available on an exchange basis.
