On Halloween night, my muffler fell off. Yeah, it was loud. Really loud. I liked it.
So, I went to a local muffler shop- not a chain- buying from a family owned company costs less much of the time.
I had a Cherry Bomb turbo muffler put on. It sounds pretty nice, but it's still quiet.
Well, I'm selling my Mustang this spring and buying a Cobra. I want to have everything looking and sounding great. I'll market it as a great first car.
My question is: Will a Glasspack produce a nice sound on a 2.3l Mustang? It didn't sound half bad through the catalytic converter. I just want to make sure that my 30$ investment is worth it.
Before you reply, I do know that Glasspacks are illegal in most if not all states. So are headlight covers in many states. So is jaywalking. So is talking on your cell phone while driving. So is SPEEDING. Yet people still do it.

Hahaha! I did that too. That turbo muffler did make a noticable difference. Mainly because my last muffler was clogged, ultra restrictive, and the pipe had so much torsion and twists in it.
The reason why I ask about the glasspack is:
I heard a soundclip of a 2.3l Ranger with a glasspack. It sounded pretty nice. Then I heard a 2.0l engine Ranger with a glasspack. Um... It sounded like a freakin' ricer. NOT the sound I'm going for...
When I had my exhaust system fall off, my car sounded freakin sweet. Now, this muffler only sounds sweet when I'm going 6k rpms. That means it never sounds sweet... hahaha
A friend said he'd order a glasspack and install it (pipes n' all) for 45$. DEAL
yah, i have glass pack, well i live down south, i removed my catalyst converter,
and new 2 inch pipe straight to my glass pack, even i had silencer removed, engine screams and growls when i over rev, which I have a 3 speed c3 transmission that i took out a4ld *overdrive trans lack power
doing 85 mph down interstate, engine screams , roars, major bad ass
Won't sound "ricey" but it's definitely different.. I've got a 24" Thrush glasspack on mine with 2" pipe from the manifold back, that ends with a 4th-gen Z/28 exhaust tip exiting right in front of the left-rear wheel... it's so loud I'm not sure it'll pass inspection, but it's just about the most wicked sounding 4-banger you'll ever hear!!!

I can get a glasspack here for about 30 bucks...But I HATE the ricer sound...or anything that is loud for the sake of it. I just want a nice quite rumble...nothing I cant back up.
Is this what a cherybomb glasspack will do for me...or a Turbo muffler?
I'm putting on a catback system tomorrow, putting a pair of Cherry Bombs on also. I Don't know how they will sound on a 2.3L, but they sound great on a 302 with dual exhaust. They should sound good though as theey are glass packs with a straight through design. I know there area lot of newer style of performance mufflers though, but I'll stick to the old fashon straight thru Glass Packs . Janstang

Well, the Turbo mufflers sound nice, but are relatively quiet on a 2.3l. You don't hear a nice tone until you are around 3000 rpms.
When I put a glasspack on mine, the sound difference was incredible. However, with rpms above 4500, you can hear the 4-banger sound come in a little clearer.
www.myspace.com/squirrelcv - I have a video on there of what my Mustang sounds like. I'm not flooring it in that movie. Maybe 2/3 of the way down on the pedal.
The weird thing is, since I bought the glasspack, anytime I go around a corner really quick, the sound goes from a nice growl to a super-low monstertruck sound that is deafening in the passenger compartment. I want to get it on video, but my camera has a hard time picking up sounds that loud.
Anyways, if you have a 2.3l and you want it to sound NICE, here's my suggestion
Go to your catalytic converter and rip off everything from there back (leave the cats, PLEASE). Go to a Ma n' Pa muffler shop and get them to go 2" ID pipe to a y-pipe or cutout routed to a glasspack. If you're using a cutout, rip out the flap. Rout both sides out the back to make a mock dual exhaust. Leave the stock cats on so you have proper backpressure
You will have ONE RUMBLY 2.3l I guarantee that. The closer to the cat you put the glasspack, the louder your exhaust will be. Why? Resonance within the pipes. If you were to take and rip off the flange at the cat, your exhaust would resonate at 2400 rpms. Try it. The sound waves reinforce eachother much like how tidal waves occur. It only occurs that that frequency. You can 'tune' your exhaust that way to a certain tone. I have the formula somewhere, but I dont feel like diggin it up...

If my ASCII art looks weird, I'm sorry. Your browser is not mine...
last year on my mustang i decided to go dual exhaust. My father had glasspacks put on his first and i really like the sound that came out. So, i as well went with glasspacks, but I went with a 3.5 in dia tip. My tone is a little deeper than my fathers, but i still like the sound of both.
I live in vermont, so i dont know about your emission laws. However i would recommend glasspacks anyday!
