My name is Johnny. I am a student and I am about two months away from purchasing my very first car… the 2.3 4cylinder Mustang LX. (1992)
I personally think it’s a great first car considering: looks, gas mileage, domestics and size… It’s perfect through my eyes, and I’m pretty sure a lot of you agree.
I just want to know what I should get… Standard or Automatic? I want to hook it up with a nice deep and loud sounding exhaust, But I think that only goes for standard right? Like I mean I want to cruise town with my mustang and make people turn their heads… But If I go automatic that means no bad ass exhaust right?
I need Pros and Cons for my Standard or Automatic Mustang.
Hiya, I see this is your first post. Welcome to the site.
The tranny choice is personal preference. If you do a lot of stop and go traffic, you might want an automatic. Bolt ons like exhaust will go on a car with an automatic with no problem. But the standard tranny is more fun, a lot of people like having total control over the car. Overall gas mileage is about the same with both trannys, so it's just personal preference.

hey there welcome to the site!
Personally i like the standard tranny just to have more control .i had never really drivin a standard b4 and only took me a day to learn . i stop and go alot plus having a construction zone on my way to school everyday and have no problems .
its overall just better for me atleast

standard all the way man. im a student as well and i just bought a 88 hatchback 2.3 n/a its standard and i put magnaflow exhuast on it and it sounds great plus like they said i like the total control.
I have an automatic, and i would even have to say standard... I think i might switch when the turbo engine goes in.

It all boils down to driving style, personal preference, and your size.
I have an automatic transmission in all of my Mustangs because my legs are too long to comfortably deal with a clutch pedal in stop-and-go traffic with the limited leg room in these cars.
Also, the parasitic power loss with the A4LD automatic transmissions behind the 2.3L engines is horrendous, the T5 manual transmission cars are MUCH more enjoyable from a performance standpoint.
Durability would be the last concern, while the T5 in the 2.3 cars is by no means heavy-duty, it'll hold up to all but the harshest thrashings with a stock engine in front of it. The A4LD automatic is a delicate little creature that will not hold up to abuse at all.

I actually got a little better mileage when I replaced my automatic with a 5spd. I went from 27mpg to 30mpg with just the swap. The overdrive on the 5spd is a little better than the automatic. My highway RPMs are lower now than before.

Where did you get the manual trans? If it was off a 5.0 mustang the ratios are taller. That's the one I would get if you were going for gas milage.
I have an auto for my '90 lx, but wish it had a manual tranny. Gives more control of the car and I miss downshifting and all that in my '05, specially because of the stupid white stuff on the ground so my baby has to stay in the garage

My auto shifts when it wants to, could be when I expect it or it could be about ten minutes down the road. When it finally shifts, the tires chirp and I get thrown back in the seat. I like to think it keeps the excitement in our relationship.
