Default New Owner - 1979 Mustang Indy 500 Turbo

Hi guys,

I just bought a 1979 Indy 500 Turbo Mustang. I have never owned a turbocharged car before, and I was wondering a few diffrent things.

First is there any good advice for things to keep in mind about a turbocharged car? What can I do to keep my car tuned and running at its best performance? Is there any upgrades I can use that would help my car run better, like maybe some parts from a newer mustang that will work with my mustang?

Second, what are some ideas for some upgrades to help get some extra horsepower? I can pick up a lot of stuff from the junkyard, but I have limited funds at the momment. So maybe some cheap ideas, followed with some future plans to spends alot of money on.

I would love to hear some ideas and suggestions.

Basically the condition of the car is, some minor surface rust in a few spots, broken door handle, cracked windshield, and the engine and overall car runs wll. The paint is faded and could use a new paint job.

Thanks for your time!

Hey there!

I don't know anything about the upgrades you can go for, but here's a tip:

If you drive it hard and get to your destination, just keep the engine running for awhile, to let the turbochargers cool off. I don't know how solid the turbos are on Mustangs, but the Maserati Biturbo had quite some issues, when driven hard and just turning the engine off upon arrival. (And of course this applies to all the turbocharged cars out there)

Congrats on your car!

Ok, you think if I put an electric radiator that will run for a few mins after I turned the car off might solve that problem?

I just wanted to add that this turbo mustang is a little different from a typical SVO type. This turbo has a 2.3 CARBERATED four cylinder, and I don’t know what that means in terms of the difference in performance and the ability to tweak things differently.

Thanks for the suggestion fenistyler. I'm going to be driving it from out of state 600 miles home, I can't get a two car trailer so... It's going to be pretty hot I’m guessing, and I'll let it run for a while and cool down when I get back or if I make any stops on the way.

I'll be driving out on Saturday 6am, pick it up, and then drive back, it's about a 6 hour drive. I'm hoping it can make the drive, cause I don't have much money after buying into fix it up, so... I hope everything works out.

Thanks again.

well the best thing to do to help your turbo would be to get a Turbo Timer. you can a pretty cheap one dat gets the job done on ebay for a couple of bucks. it would allow you to set a timer for the amount of time you want the car to stay on allowing the Turbo to cool off. Depending on how u drive it would depend on how long u leave it on. dat way u dont have to worry about havin to stay in da car waitin to turn it off.

never heard of that car 'till now. hope u enjoy it. i aswell just bought a turbo stang, i managed to find me an SVO and having some probs tryin to make it run. but i cant wait till it runs.....
