Default Black out of the tail pipe.

Its official my Zephyr must have a grudge against me or something. Anyways...went out and started it today (I try at least once a week) there was a heavy dew and it started but it just won't go. Pulled the distibutor cap off...dry as a bone. Going to replace the distributor next. But it feels like its missing even when it hasn't had any moisture near it. I open the throtle and it shakes really bad.

I take it around the block and open it up. Runs fine...pulled over put it in park...reved it...back in drive...it starts chugging almost stalls put it to the floor and its almost like I flooded it when it was running. Race it back home and park it. I just can't figure it out. Heres a picture of what come out of the tail pipe when its in pretty much any gear.
My dad says build up in the exaust...I have no clue. Maybe you guys might have an idea.

p.s.
my #1 cylinder may be okay...I might have jumped the gun a bit.

I rebulit the carb last summer. It had always done it a little bit but not like it is in the picture. So is it possble for me to open the carb up and adjust/replace the float with out having to do another rebuild?

absolutely. Just be careful with the gaskets. Check and make sure the choke is opening like it should as well.

An extremely dirty air filter will cause problems too.

Dude that come from is raw fuel being dumped in to the engine so the carburater might be out of adjustment.

Take the breather off, crank the engine and look down the carb with a light......if you see raw fuel dripping down the throat of the carb......well, then the carb is the problem. Float set too high or the carb has a crack in it somewhere. If you dont feel like sticking your head over the carb, use a mirror and strong flashlite.

Exhaust system could be stopped up or collasped.......

I was going to run by Checker today and get a new float. I might pickup up an extra gasket just to be on the safe side. But I'm not even going to look down it cause once you take off the air cleaner you can smell the gas. Hopefully this will fix it.

I'm planning on removing the cat (don't have emissions in my part of Az) and I don't want to replace the whole exaust system. Can I buy just a piece that replaces the cat or do would I have to rig up something? Cause my dad bought one for his 81 Toyota...in the 80's.
I really don't want to destroy it cause I may need someday.

Could also be too much fuel pump pressure.

You typically don't see that with a mechanical pump though. More often the case not enough pressure due to a worn pump.

I'm in agreement on the float setting or even something wrong with the needle and seat. I've had trash hold the needle open and flood them before.

I can't see the pic (work network issues) is it black "flakes" or black smoke?

Black flakes could mean water ingestion.

You're right about the pressure, what was I thinking?

I have had carbs where the boss on the carb where the fulcrum pin on the float rotates was wore out and the needle would not seat properly resulting in flooding.......on a metal float, that can be adjusted out but on a plastic float.....good luck.

You just have to be careful not to break the tab off of the plastic float. It's not always easy. I learned pretty quick adjusting floats on V6 outboards. 6 floats amongst 3 carbs.

it starts off with "black water" but turns to flakes/real fine suit. But when the engine rpms get up it starts giving off balck smoke.

well I ordered the float and it gets here in about 3 days. I will change that. So you think the fuel pump could be wearing out?

A worn out fuel pump won't make it run rich.

Did you check the float to see if it's bad? There's no reason to change it unless you can hear fuel sloshing inside it. It may just need adjusted. They usually give you one of those cheap cardboard float adjustment tools in the rebuild kit to help get the float set right.

Well when I rebuilt the carb I didn't replace the float. Don't know why I just didn't. Seeing its 28 years old I'm going to replace it. But before I do I will see if it's out of adjustment. Seeing I'm going to have to open up the carb to do so.
