Default OBD I code readers

Does anybody know of place that will read the codes for OBD I computer on my '93 2.3L lx for free. I used to go to autozone but then the other day they said they can't and that they never have before. Well I argued and said ,ya you can, you've done it before.... and we back and forth......but long story short I don't won't to buy an expensive code reader. Or, does anybody know of any cheap ones for sale.

O'Reilly said they stopped doing it because somebody some where got their codes cleared and then their engine caught on fire and now its some corporate policy that they don't. (that's just what I was told) I don't have an Advanced Auto parts around me.

Maybe 20PSI, new computer, new 3" VAM, and some porting will make it faster
