I had a condition VERY much like what you are going through..... I pulled the ignition module and had it tested, turned out the module was ok,the pickup coil inside the dizzy had gone bad. I thought I could replace the pickup coil myself...WRONG!!!! it's not that its so hard to do just on my model I would have to have a press. To make this short, bought a remanned dizzy for less than $80.00.........pickup coil goes for under $20.00 Hope this helps.

Most likely an ignition module issue. They are prone to failure. Since it's an 86, eventhough it is carburetted, it still has a computer and EEC IV electronics. You can check for codes and see if it spits out an ignition module code. Haynes and Chilton manuals tell you how to retrieve codes.

Here's a free test.....put a timimg light on it like you normally would and crank it over. The light should strobe like normal (only slower) if you are getting spark.
The ignition module (TFI) can be checked by any parts place. A defective TFI won't throw any codes though, and if you buy a code reader it will come with a booklet that will tell you how to use it and give you the chart for what number relates to what code.
